Hotel Doherty opens with Clare Chamber honors

The Clare Chamber of Commerce hosted a Monday evening banquet at Hotel Doherty to celebrate the new hotel. Guests filled the dining room and lobby while speeches by Judge Ray Hart and others praised Mr. A. J. Doherty and the community efforts that built the landmark.

Mrs. Mary Tower Dies at 72 in Sheridan Township

Mrs. Mary Tower aged 72 years 7 months and 12 days died at her Sheridan township home on Sunday May 11. Born Mary F. Madden in York State on September 29 1845 she married Theodore L. Tower July 3 1868 and had four children. Surviving sons are Harry Tower Cedar Grove Louisiana Evin Tower Marion and Elmer Tower Clare. Grandchildren and great grandchildren number fourteen and six respectively. Funeral was held at Eagle church with Rev F Bates officiating and burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.

Auto Laws to Be Enforced This Year

State police patrols expand across Michigan as traffic rises. Drivers must carry licenses, ensure legible licenses, and avoid dirty or blank signed documents. Vehicles require two white front lights and a red rear light, with spotlights banned. Lights on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise. New rules attach the bill of sale to the title application for new cars and require in person sworn signatures. Cars must not be stopped on roadways for repairs. when entering state roads from side streets, drivers must stop. A 72 page Michigan motor vehicle code booklet is available from the county treasurer.

Harrison Bank Safe Found After Bold Break In

Early this week Sheriff Crigier of Harrison was notified by Muskegon county that the safe from the Harrison State Bank had been located about twenty miles from Muskegon. A farmer who spoke a foreign language found the safe while seeking his cow. He alerted a nearby worker and the Muskegon bankers, who informed authorities. About 75000 in security papers were recovered. 7000 in money was missing. Entrance had been made with an acetylene torch. No robbers found.

Legion and Petania Meet For Memorial Day Plans

The Walter H. Larmon Post of the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will meet Monday evening May 19 at 8 in the Legion Club Rooms. They plan cooperation with other groups to honor Memorial Day and remember veterans of World War I and other wars. Poppies will be sold for ten cents to fund the remembrance effort.

Theodore Bowler of Clare dies suddenly Wednesday evening while working as mail clerk on the Ann Arbor railroad between Beulah and Frankfort. Attack on Pastor During Singing At Battle Creek Church

Rev Quinton Walker of First Methodist church was grabbed by a man later identified as Chris Myers a West Leroy farmer and former mental patient during the closing hymn Myers seized the pastor by the neck and was restrained Myers was carried out and Walker sustained a strained shoulder and scratches in the incident Authorities note Myers had approached the altar twice before the benediction and attempted contact after the service Detroit Free Press reports the minister later remembered as a farmer and pastor in Battle Creek city records.

William Henry Thompson born in Canada December 14 1841 died May 6 1924 at his home on West 5th Clare aged 82 years 4 months 22 days. Married Mary Macklen September 26 1864 she preceded him in death. They moved to Huron then Clare counties and had twelve children eight boys four girls 10 survived eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral at Congregational church last Thursday Rev H B Johnson officiated with burial at Cherry Grove.
