Services Held for Pfc Howard Calkins in Detroit

Funeral services were held for Private First Class Howard D. Calkins of Detroit at Haley Chapel with Rev. N C Liesmer officiating. Born October 18, 1921, he was killed in the Battle of the Bulge on July 18, 1944. Relatives from Clare Rosebush Lansing Eaton Rapids attended the service.

City Commission Election Set for Monday in Clare

Clare voters head to the city hall auditorium next Monday May 10 for the first election under the new charter. Two two year city terms and three one year terms will be filled along with one four year Justice of the Peace. Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. with multiple candidates listed for each office.

Mothers and Daughters Banquet Highlights by Congregational Guild

The Congregational Guild held its annual Mother-Daughter Banquet on a Wednesday evening in the church parlors with good attendance. Mrs. William Powe gave the invocation. an orchestra from the school provided dinner music directed by Harold Collins. Mrs. Alex Artibee led greetings and honored three charter members while bouquets were exchanged for the mother with the youngest daughter the newest bride and a large family present.

Mrs Phoebe J Rosenberger Dies Here in Clare

Phoebe Jane Erb born March 6 1858 in Guelph Ontario died April 28 1948 in Clare Michigan at ninety years old. She married Samuel Rosenberger September 21 1875 and he died March 20 1929. Surviving children Irvin Rosenberger Flint Michigan Joanna Bechtel deceased 1945 and others in Michigan Ontario California and Detroit with fourteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at MLB C Church Pontiac with Rev Orval Eastman Rev Avery and Rev Eagle officiating. Burial in Perry Mount Park Cemetery.

Spring Operetta Set For Clare Public School Auditorium

The Clare Public School will stage the Spring operetta Who Stole the Tarts on Friday May 7 at 8:00 p m in the school auditorium. Fifth graders star with a large cast including Margaret Thatcher Peter Brown Nancy Neff Joyce Archambault and many others. The story features Fairyland characters and a Royal Gardens setting in the afternoon scene.

Beta Sigma Phi installs officers for year

The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its regular meeting Monday evening May third at Barnes Cafe to install officers for the coming year. President Jean Allen, Vice President Mary Wicklund, Secretary Maxine Kirkpatrick, Treasurer Norma Six, and Mrs. Moryan McDonald were honored for past work. Glare Chapter members attended the Mt. Pleasant Alpha Tota Chapter Founders Day dinner at Keeler Union with Delta Eta Chapter of Alma on April 29.

Resort operators to meet MSU specialists in Clare County

Clare County tourist and resort operators will meet three Michigan State College specialists in Farwell on Wednesday May 12 and Harrison on Thursday May 13. The sessions will focus on cabin resort planning and food handling improvements with Miss Knight assisting. Personal visits are scheduled in Farwell Thursday and Harrison and Long Lake on Friday.

Municipal Court Convictions Include Traffic Violations

Linn Meeker of Coleman pleaded guilty to assault and drunk and disorderly conduct after a disturbance in a Clare business. He was fined 10 dollars and 3.35 costs, with a 60 day jail sentence suspended on condition he avoids Clare for a year. He unpaid fine served 10 days in county jail.

Clare Public School to Receive Traveling Safety Cup Award

Clare Public School will receive the Automobile Club of Michigan Traveling Safety Cup Award and be eligible to send one safety patrol boy on the 1948 Washington trip in May. Ernest P. Davis praised Superintendent A. F. Bates and the patrol for reducing child traffic deaths. The Auto Club will cover all trip expenses for 120 Michigan patrollers joining 20,000 peers at the National School Patrol Assembly in Washington.

Harold B Hughes Elected President of Clare Rotary Club

Attorney Harold B Hughes was elected president of the Clare Rotary Club at the Wednesday noon meeting.
