Brown Wins Recount for Clare County School Commissioner

John F. Brown defeated incumbent Helen D. Hether by a fourteen vote margin after a recount of the April 5 election. Brown, a ten year county teacher, will take office July 1 following prior service in Michigan and the Philippines, while Hether may pursue teaching opportunities.

The Carrow School 4-H Club finishes its year with weekly winter sewing sessions at leader Mrs. Doris Cotton home. Miss Cora A. Smedley of Farwell was sworn into the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps on May 1. A 1983 Farwell High School graduate, she has worked in Flint for five years. She has two brothers in the Army, Hart in Africa for a year and William in radio training in Texas.

Stewart Beatty Dies at Vernon Township Farm Home

Stewart Beatty longtime Isabella county resident dies at 60 in Vernon township following months of illness. He was born October 23 1882 in Vernon township and farmed locally most of life aside from three years in northern Michigan lumber woods. Survived by wife Mae Isbell Beatty two brothers Earl and Guy aunt Ellen Wiley several nieces and nephews. Services held at Thurston funeral home with Rev. H Redman officiating. Interment Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Bond Booster Club Ends War Loan Tour in Sheridan Twp

Sheridan township held a social evening April 29 as its Bond Booster Club concluded a War Loan tour. A patriotic program featured Pat Pudway James Gillespie Joanne Richard and Vena Lee Gillespie. The auction of supper plates raised 750 in War Bonds and total sales reached 1020.00. Robert C. Kleiner bought the prize trophy.

Clare High School Gym Demonstration Planned

A physical education program will be shown in Clare High School gym on Monday evening at 8:00 May 17. Miss Susan Urquhart and Coach Leo Brown lead a program with singing games rhythmic exercises relays stunts tumbling and acrobatics by grades two through high school. The event is a joint DU8 government sponsored fitness demonstration open to the public with no admission charge.

Annual Spring Clean-Up Urged in Clare City

The annual Spring cleanup is underway in Clare. Residents should place containers at the curb for daily collection until covered. Afterward, collection will occur on the first and third Mondays each month. Salvage committee asks not to pick up salvageable tin cans with rubbish due to wartime tin needs.

S F Roberts recruiting officer at the U S Navy Recruiting Station Lansing Michigan will be at the Clare Post Office from 2 00 to 4200 pm on Friday May 14 interviewing applicants for WAVES SPARS and SHABEES. Women 20 to 35 years old who are U S citizens with high school or business school training may apply. Married status restrictions apply to WAVES SPARS. Sheridan Community 4-H Club Completes Projects of Season

The Sheridan Community 4-H Club ends its winter season with Achievement Day. Three boys Ronald Schunk Ronald Witmer and Seth Cotton finished first year handicraft. Girls sewing graduates include Janet Bradley Verna Mae Waite Ila Mae Fancon Verle Jean Fancon Lois Mae Williams Elnora Williams Margaret Cotton. Grace Rinehart led boys division. Doris Cotton supervised sewing. Members earn certificates plus gold seals, with twenty three members and projects in canning gardening poultry dairying and corn.

Circuit Court to Convene in Harrison Next Monday

The May term of Circuit Court will convene in the Court House at Harrison next Monday with Judge Ray Hart on the bench. Calendar includes criminal cases People v Stager and others, trespass, garnishment, divorce, and injunction actions, plus probate and accounting matters. Continued on Page Ten.

Two Injuries Reported From Clare Streets

A six and a half year old girl, Kay Wilkie, was struck by a car at McEwan and Fourth in Clare, suffering bruises, shock, and a scalp wound. Mrs. M. H. Pratt injured in a fall near Kroger Store, bruised head and lost tooth. At 3:25 am Sunday, Harold E. Baker 16 of Glare hit a parked car near Freeland. Baker knee bump and Arthur Clure 19 of Clare lip laceration.

Bicknell Succumbs at Clare Home

James L. Bicknell longtime Clare banker and president of The Citizens State Bank died suddenly at his East Fifth Street home just before seven. Born April 4 1874 in Saginaw he built a career in Clare politics and civic life earning esteem as a financier and community leader. Funeral services were held at the Clare Congregational Church with interment in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
