A Sunday rock concert at Mid Michigan Community College near Harrison drew about 2000 young attendees with five bands. Sheriff Ray Lippold Jr and detectives praised student marshals for orderliness. no arrests were made despite crowded parking and minor weather setbacks.
Clare City Commission outlined May 10 14 as Clean-Up Paint-Up Fix-Up Week with the annual event co sponsored by local groups.
Clare County approved the state equalized valuation of 110 921 477 for tax levies despite it being 11 million higher than local assessments totaling 99 895 000. A variable factor will raise local totals to the state figure, with differences across townships and property types.
Students at Clare High prepare costumes led by Vicki Garver for The Music Man to be performed May 13 through 15 in River City. Young designers, technical crew, and backstage staff fill pivotal roles with tickets sold by students and at the door.

Two seats on the Harrison Board of Education will be filled in the June 14 election. Incumbents Charles Ashcraft and William Hileman face terms ending. Ashcraft seeks re election while Hileman will not run again. Petitions with 20 signatures must be filed with Secretary Hileman by 4 p.m. May 14.
Clare will file a protest rather than appeal after the State Tax Commission set the city’s valuation at 14.56 million dollars, above the 13.38 million assessed figure, boosting tax factors. Mayor Koch criticized using only 17 of 74 sales data and urged copies to Gov Milliken and legislators.
The Clare High School Symphonic Band earned a Division I rating at the State Band Festival in Kalamazoo after three prepared pieces and a sight reading, under Kenneth Fenely. The Reserve Band earned a II rating, both bands judged by three judges plus a separate sight reading panel, with parochial sites at Parchment and Otsego High Schools. Earlier, Clare’s Junior Band, directed by Lloyd Conley, achieved straight ratings at Mt. Pleasant State Junior Festival.
