Rotary club members tour Clare Manufacturing to learn about the shift from auto carburetion to aircraft production. Engineer Marvin Gies explains the YI57-P-3 engine bleed valve control and discusses engine performance, testing, and precision machining at the Clare plant.
Clare high seniors planning the senior trip must attend a meeting with their parents in the school auditorium at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday May 9. The meeting covers behavior standards as set by the Board of Education and requires at least one parent per student. Students missing the meeting or failing to arrange acceptable alternatives will be barred from the trip.
Mrs. Adelaide Elden will present a May one man show of oil paintings at Clare City Library. Her realism emphasizes form and perspective, with four years of painting experience under Mrs. Virginia Seiter. This is the Area Arts League sponsored third in a series of library exhibits featuring local artists.
An April 23 chicken dinner in the Harrison Congregational Church dining room honored church school officers and teachers. Circle One of the Women’s Fellowship sponsored the event with co chairs Neil Kinne Dan Czyzewski Ida Hamp Flavia Schaaf and Edith Starr assisting. Twenty guests attended as Mrs Charles Ample spoke and Rev Claggett thanked the group for six years of pastoral service.
Dan Loomis, son of Mr and Mrs Harold Loomis, caught a sixteen inch rainbow on Tobacco River near Clare during opening trout season. Mrs Delmar Allen spotted a pure blue male among gold finches in her yard Wednesday. Fire chief Stan Parish thanks Ken and Helen Barnes for a portable radiosonic loudspeaker donated by the Barneses to aid volunteers after January fires. Water shut off on Beach Street near Fourth caused complaints over lack of notice.
The Sentinel will publish a timely feature with Civil Defense, Clare Fire Department, and Police cooperation. Superintendent Richard Wheeler will outline school plans to protect children during tornado alerts and provide guidance on personal and community actions to reduce panic and aid organized protection.
The Clare Jaycees announce their last regular meeting before Charter Night on Thursday May 2 at 8 00 pm in the Clare High School Cafeteria. The group aims for strong turnout to discuss the Charter Night Banquet the State Convention and the first project. Dinner follows May 15 installation with many officers present. about 100 guests expected.
Mrs. Robert Mitchell learned her brother William G. Ryan aged 26 was killed Monday night in an accident in Minneapolis Minnesota. The body was brought to Detroit for funeral services. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Ryan, formerly of Clare.
Richard Logan was arrested last week by Michigan State Police in Vassar and held in Saginaw County jail. Clare police picked him up Sunday on January 4 charged with disorderly conduct. He pleaded guilty in Clare Municipal Court before Justice William B. Dunlop. A warrant had been issued last January after a fight at Chuck's Tavern in Clare. Dunlop offered $100 fines and sixty days in jail. Logan initially stayed in jail but paid the fine and was released.
The Valley Trails Boy Scout Council announced support for reviving the Clare County United Fund this fall. A May 8 organizational meeting is set for 8 p.m. at the Hotel Doherty with service clubs civic and church groups invited.
Hien Fancon of Clare won top honors in the Clare County 4-H Dress Revue at the Harrison Achievement Day on April 26. She will represent Clare County at State 4-H Club Week July 9-12 at MSU. Several others earned dress revue honors and Style Revue pins. Janet Johnson and Margie Swindlehurst were named Isabella County State Style Show reps. Over 400 attended the Achievement Day showcasing 150 4-H members and numerous club leaders received awards.
The Clare Study Club plans its May meeting on Tuesday evening May 7 at Hotel Doherty with dinner before the program. Dr. Bowen of Central Michigan College will present students performing selections from the Annual Oral Interpretations Festival. Arrangements handled by Mrs. George Beck and Mrs. Hugh Kennedy. Guests invited. This is the final meeting of the year.
The Clare Theta Rho Girls Club No 11 hosted District 6 on April 27 at Clare City Hall with about fifty girls, advisors and guests. Attendees included St Louis Coleman Flint and Clare clubs, with Coleman hosting 1958 meet next year and special guests from Lansing Vassar Grand Rapids and Eaton Rapids.
Michigan inspector of jails W H Nestle praised Clare County Jail in a January visit, noting a rise from a low rating to one of the state's highest. He commended Sheriff James Darling's oversight and said the facility should maintain its high standing. The letter also mentions a management rule requiring prisoners to wear a coverall or similar garment for safety and sanitation.
The Clare Pioneers were limited to four hits and lost 3 to 2 to St. Louis Monday April 29 at the St. Louis diamond. Freshman John Zinser pitched seven innings allowing five hits and two earned runs as the Pioneer defense committed five errors while St. Louis had six errors.
Dr. Charles W. Cole says Amherst College president notes in a Harper’s condensed Readers Digest piece that today’s youths practice dating steadiness to plan marriage. The trend widens a gap with parents and raises questions about social life and early marriage.
A Zenobia Chapter 0.E.S. special meeting held Thursday April 25 for initiation and Friends Night. Mrs Lillian Barber and Warren White served as hosts. Guests included Mrs Sarah I Wilson of Midland and officers from Mt Pleasant Harrison Midland Farwell Beaverton Gladwin welcomed in the East.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce launches a member drive with a May 7 breakfast at 7 a.m. at Hotel Doherty. Directors fan out to solicit $15 yearly dues, hand out new decals and membership cards, and present a kit detailing 1956 achievements and plans. Ben Burdo of Clare Hardware is president. Allen Ott of Citizens State Bank is secretary.
The Eagle Extension Group met April 23 at Mrs. Wallace Carrow's home with eight members. Mrs. Bryan Miller chaired and outlined table decorations and the Achievement Day exhibit. She and Mrs. Cecil Pudway spoke on Government and You after attending an April 9 meeting in Harrison. An afternoon open meeting was noted and refreshments were served. plans to attend Achievement Day on May 2 were shared.
The Salt River Farm Bureau and Herrick Farm Bureau co hosted the Farm Bureau Woman's Activity Group event on Tuesday April 23 at the Orr Community Building. Mt. Pleasant guest speaker Mr. Knapp spoke in the afternoon. A pot luck dinner followed.
