Spikehorn Myers and five bears drew over 5 000 people at the Masonic Temple Detroit for a Hobby Lobby broadcast on March 16. Myers, living eleven miles north of Clare, spoke as a naturalist with tales of honey hunts and bear help. Kenneth Ruble helped move the bears, and Myers stayed at the Hotel Statler during the Detroit visit. A Florida reader called the broadcast plain and amusing.

Tragic crash at McEwan Street injures two women
At approximately 2:20 Friday morning a car at the Pete Marquette crossing struck a cement signal block on McEwan Street. Miss Bertha Tulgestke, 27, of Roger City died at Mt. Pleasant Community Hospital. EB Sova, Mt. Pleasant, and Miss Mary Reinhart, 22, of Bedford, were listed as recovering.

The third annual boxing show at the high school gym featured top contenders in the lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight divisions. Carl Cappaert won the lightweight trophy with coach Danny Rose presenting. Norman Sutton retained middleweight. Edwin Foss replaced Jarvis Kapplinger as heavyweight champion. Trophies were awarded at the Athletic Banquet Wednesday night. Defending champions were Tom Kane in lightweight, Norman Sutton in middleweight, and Jarvis Kapplinger in heavyweight. Monday preliminaries highlighted Carl Cappaert vs Wesley Lamborn and Ronald Brown vs Philip Bradway, plus Kapplinger’s technical knockout over Lowell Haring.
