Local caucus meetings drew modest crowds as supervisors clerks and treasurers were named for several townships. Key races included Republican and Union tickets selecting town officers such as highway commissioners and justices with terms varying from two to four years.
The Zenobia Chapter O. B. H. S. sponsors a spring luncheon next Wednesday at the Masonic dining room with Mrs. Glen Lloyd as general chairman. Public seating opens at 12 30 with a program of music and recitations led by Mrs. EH A Anderson. Mrs. Phimsey chairs dining room, Mrs. Williams runs the kitchen, and Mrs. Lloyd Wagner handles tickets. Bridge tables and card games will provide afternoon diversion.
A fish fry event at Twin Elms Country Club tonight features tasty fish and a public gathering with an old time dancing invitation. The gathering happens on Friday March 18 and welcomes attendees.
The St. Cecilia church announces a bake sale at the Jackson market on Saturday March 19. Funds raised support church activities and community programs. Local volunteers will sell cakes pies cookies and breads.
Clare High plans its third annual boxing show to kick off spring athletics on March 21-22. Defending champions include Jarvis Kapplinger heavy Norman Sutton middle Tom Kane light, with prior winners Walt Kleiner and Laurence Jackson noted. Varsity Club sponsors. proceeds fund photography gear.
Forty ladies gathered at Mrs. George White s home for guest day hosted by the Congregational Guild. Devo tions opened the meeting with a program committee named for the next three months. The group planned a pot luck supper for March 30 and pledged to redecorate the church. An April 4 election day lunch at the church was scheduled.
The Methodist Auxiliary gathered Wednesday afternoon March 16 with Mrs Ernest Green as host. President Mrs D E Holbrook introduced Mrs Frank Hachmuth who led devotions from Psalm 15 and Billy Sunday writings. They sang All Hail The Power Of Jesus Name and planned a banquet and Easter breakfast. Mrs Green received praise as ideal hostess. Next meeting set with Mrs James Olson.
Michigan State College football coach Charles Bachman will be the principal speaker at Clare high school's Kiwanis Athletic Banquet at city hall on Wednesday March 23. Dinner is at 6 30 with tickets 75 cents. The event honors top athletes and scholars with a trophy and medal pending the evening announcement.
Members of the Tenth District attended the American Legion and Auxiliary sessions in Detroit at the Statler and Memorial Home. Department Commander Carl H. Smith led the gatherings with about fifty attendees, followed by a banquet, program, and dance on Saturday and a Sunday luncheon.
City fire department responded to a Thursday noon blaze at Mr and Mrs Geo Johnsons West 7th street residence. investigators credit wiring in the basement as the likely cause. firefighters with gas masks contained the dense smoke and the loss is estimated at 300 dollars.
Fish supper served Friday March 18 and every Friday thereafter with special dinners by appointment at Irwin’s Restaurant, Rockwall.
Oil reporters note McKay is-Jdsnlin wells rigging to drill a gas test soon. Murphy No. 2 well on Peirce’s east side in Wise township reaches 300 feet with drive pipe expected by Saturday. Gulf Refining Co’s Doherty estate test in Grant township has gas strata breached and depth is 1521 feet.
Clare County hosts a series of meetings to explain the 1938 Agricultural Adjustment Act provisions. Sessions cover county allotments for soil depleting and soil building crops, including wheat and potato acreage limits and eligible payments for compliant farmers.
The Isabella Clare District of Valley Trails Council stages a two day Scoutcraft Exposition March 28 and 29 at Mt Pleasant High School Gymnasium from 6 to 10 pm. More than 14 troops participate with first aid safety demonstrations and booths funded by local businesses. Tickets go on sale Saturday with a rally Friday featuring Chuck Boyer and a program of songs stunts and talks. Prizes include tents axes knives and other Boy Scout equipment for top ticket sellers.
Mrs. A B Mulder hosts a Clare Good Literature meeting with Neil Sowle and cast members Gertrude MacAlonan and Melvin Robinette sharing operetta dialogue and a Pirates of Penzance duet. Members tour nine states with Mrs Houghton and Mrs Jones recounting. Esther Tobler’s New York Week talk plus Manhattan Serenade piano close. Next gathering April 12 at Mrs. Oise Derby’s home.
Sunday March 13 at the home of Mr and Mrs Harry Maybee in Rosebush the joint celebration honored their twenty third anniversary and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Wiltse second wedding anniversary which occurred March 10 1938 A buffet dinner followed by games music and visiting entertained all attendees including the Ouderkirk and Graham families and H Lloyd Jones and LaVerne Simpson families Those unable to attend were Ben Underkirk and Max Coss Edna Mayhee The guests extended best wishes for many more years together.
Rev Clyde Rothrick the blind Evangelist will share his life story at Clare Baptist Church Friday evening March 18 at 7 30. An ordained minister from Cadillac he travels with Rev and Mrs Rothrick and Mr Forbes. He will discuss his life, sight loss, faith, his trained dog and life works along with a ukulele duet and guitar song.
Adelaide O. Wylie Grand Esther of Michigan led a week of Schools of Instruction. At Winn four Zenobia Chapter members attended with Dr Christina M Schutt Lillian Walker and Alexander Wylie. Farwell Chapter hosted eight Clare attendees with dignitaries from Zenobia and Victory Chapter. Blanchard and Clare also participated with Saint Patrick's lunch served.
Art Damoth has been named County Chairman for the Michigan Society for Crippled Children campaign. The drive opens April 1 and runs through April, with coworkers appointed countywide to support financing for hundreds of handicapped children in the state.
The Clare Democrats gathered at city hall to nominate city and ward candidates for the spring election April 4. The Republican convention later nominated John W. Dunlop for mayor for a second term and chose city and ward officers across three wards.
The Clare school auditorium hosted two showings to capacity crowds of over 500 Wednesday night. The program featured Our Own School and A Day in Our School, staged by Universal Producing Co. president Mr Womble and photographer Mr Mason from South Bend Indiana. Proceeds fund sound motion picture equipment.
