Mayor Lewis H. Thompson argues for water meters to curb waste and fund pumping costs. He notes wells cleaned in 1926 and rising pump pressures as evidence, urging a fair, measurable system with 20 000 gallons per quarter at $2.00 and 10 cents per extra thousand gallons.
Thirty players from sixteen of eighteen high schools in the Mt. Pleasant regional tourney were picked for three mythical basketball teams of ten. Selections honor individual tournament performance, speed, accuracy, and competitive attitude with Reed City Clar, Chesaning Greenwalt, Durand Kors among those named.
G R Bogan will continue as Clare school superintendent after a Board of Education decision following Tuesday’s meeting. A Clare high school graduate and Michigan State College alumnus, he led the high school for three years before being elevated to the top post. His tenure this year has pleased authorities and earned him strong support from students and townspeople.
Zemmer Motor Sales reports Chevrolet has broken all past sales records by delivering 250000 cars since January 1. A March 19 radio celebration from 9 30 EST will air on 32 stations from Boston to San Antonio including Jacksonville and Omaha.
Clare County residents attended a Harrison meeting where the Harrison Hunting and Fishing Club unanimously renamed to Clare County Conservation Club. The group, started in 1926 with 160 members, plans a membership drive and discussed opening select county lakes to fishing beginning May first, appointing a committee to approach the Director of Conservation.
A banquet for the Clara basketball team and Jane will be served at the Congregational church parlors on Thursday evening March 22 at 6:45. Tickets may be obtained from committee members.
The city caucus of the Republican and Democratic parties met with strong turnout. Mayor candidates include Ralph Hether for the Republicans and L H Thompson for the Democrats. District nominees cover clerks treasurer supervisors and aldermen with several positions unopposed or undecided.

A joint Alma Forest Hill Shepherd Mt Pleasant and Clare committee presented petitions signed by 3500 voters requesting road paving on Mall Street Michigan from Alma to Clare. The administrative board authorized pavement with a minor change at Shepherd to remove two railroad crossings. Representing Clare were S. M. Callihan Ralph Hether and Rev H B Johnson.
In Mt Pleasant last Friday Clare lost to Reed City 81 to 19 in the regional tournament. Reed City won the championship Saturday by beating Chesaning 26 to 21. Clare, off night but sportsmanlike, had two season losses but held district title at Alma. Coach Aldréau expects a strong next season with only Parker and Stanley graduating.
Sugar beet acreage for the coming season is rising rapidly at the Mt. Pleasant plant of the Columbia Sugar Company. About 6,500 acres have been contracted so far, with expectations to reach 9,000 by seeding time. Frank Forest replaces W S Teeter as field agent. Forest already has extensive experience and has contracted about 350 acres with hopes to nearly double. The Farwell district was discontinued. no sugar beets will be received from Clare next fall, though substantial acreage remains in progress.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. F. Niemeyer marked fifty years of marriage with a Sunday ceremony in Clare attended by about fifty relatives and friends. Their three children Chas., Roy, and Emma were present. Mrs. Niemeyer’s thirty-third birthday was also noted as guests brought flowers and well wishes.
Obituary for Volney Augustus Tryon born Akron Ohio 1853 who died March 7 1928 at his Sheridan township home at 75. He moved to Ionia county as a child and married Mary Al- mira Shaver in 1877. Survived by wife Mrs George Penny Detroit and children Jesse Ypsilanti Archie Pontiac Zella at home plus siblings and many relatives. Funeral held March 10 at Hagle church with Rev Frank Bates. interment Cherry Grove cemetery.
A fire destroyed the Des Ormeau Blacksmith shop at East Fourth and Pine in Clare. Origin unknown, blaze raced through the building before discovery, logs and tools valued around 2500 with only partial insurance. Ernest Beal stored a car in the shop. car uninsured and also destroyed.
G L C staged the Good Literature Club play Manners and Modes Tuesday evening. Doris Gerow and Mrs Wilma Achard played the clerks to amused effect. Doris Merritt Katherine Crowell Genevieve Tosier Bernice Evans Ruth Hardie Mia Doris Ann Bicknell added laughter. Next meeting postponed to April 7 due to spring vacation.
More than a hundred Clare County figures including the Board of Supervisors and county officers gathered with Clare Chamber of Commerce members at Phelps Cafeteria. Attendees heard from Herman N. Butler on regional development, L L Drake on extension work, and Thomas Horton on student speaking awards, stressing county agriculture, tourism, and Northeastern Michigan growth.
