The Clare Bleeding Clinic closed on March 2 after collecting 200 pints of blood. Dr. A B Mitchell led the effort with broad local support from Zenobia Chapter No 129 of the Order of Eastern Star and numerous volunteers including Bernice Moline as canteen chair and a team of nurses, aides, and student registrants under Mrs. Ross Nelson. The drive, aiding plasma supplies for out state and fighters, may return next year with continued community involvement across Clare Harrison and Farwell offices and Red Cross helpers.

Charles Spohn Home Burns to Ground in Greenwood Township
Friday evening the farm home of Mr and Mrs Charles Spohn in Greenwood township burned to the ground while the family attended a Red Cross box social at Frost town hall. Harrison fire department saved the barn but the house was destroyed. Mrs Spohn stays with daughter Myrtle Miller in Harrison and Mr Spohn with son Milton nearby to care for stock.

SGT GEO BAXTER KILLED IN ACTION IN ITALY
War Department message reports Sgt. George A. Baxter 24 of Columbus Ohio killed in action in Italy on January 23 while serving as an Army Paratrooper. He enlisted January 1941 and went overseas April 1943 as an early Sicily parachutist. He attended Hvansville Indiana and Clare high schools and has sisters Alta in Columbus and Mary in Corpus Christi WAVES.

Mrs Juliana Zimmer Mielke born 1879 in Lublin Poland died of a heart attack February 29 1944 in Arthur Township Clare County Michigan aged 65. She leaves husband Samuel two sons Albert and Gerhard two daughters Martha Von Linsow e Nathalia Block ten grandchildren three great grandchildren and several in laws. Funeral services were held March 3 at home in Arthur Township and at St John’s Lutheran Hamilton Township.
