Potatoes Defended and Debated in 18th Century Scotland
An 18th century debate in Scotland centered on potatoes. Pulpit denunciations argued potatoes were not biblical fit for Christians and labeled them the forbidden fruit linked to Adam’s fall. Reports also note fears of leprosy fever and a Royal Society backed English cultivation seen as capitalist suppression of the poor. A labor leader warned workers against being fed "cattle food" by promoters.
