Wool Helmets Keep Soldiers Safe in Freezing Cold
Hand knit wool helmets cover head and neck with eye openings and allow breathability. First issued in World War I, today about 1500 helmets have been sent to U S bases in Greenland and Labrador for outdoor service in subzero weather. Survivors of a 1964 Greenland crash credited the helmets with face protection from flames and extreme cold until rescue.
