Legion Post and Auxiliary Hold Social Meeting

Last Monday the Walter H. Lar man Post of the American Legion and the Auxiliary Unit held a social evening after the reg nar meeting. An eventful program, refreshments and dancing followed a nonmeeting by the Auxiliary. Members discussed hospital visits for T Carl Eulbrook and Arleigh Gorr. The Post changed meeting night to the first and third Mondays, with the next gathering on March 20. They planned attendance at the Tenth District meeting in Midland on March 7 and requested a government printed book on Federal Laws Relating to Veterans. A Washington Lincoln birthday party featured children of members performing a Virginia reel and a flag drill, with Mrs Gilliespie chairing and Mrs Hall directing. The program closed with camp melodies on the concertina by James Gillespie.

Democratic Convention and Ward Caucuses in Clare

The Democratic Convention for the City of Clare will be held Tuesday March 14 1933 at 8 00 P M in City Hall to nominate candidates for Mayor City Clerk City Treasurer Justice of Peace full term and to transact other business. Ward caucuses follow immediately in First Ward at Fred Smalley's Wagon Shop Second Ward at Jackson's Market office Third Ward at Clare City Hall to nominate Supervisor Alderman Constable and transact other business.

Judge Hart Cancels Foreclosures Under Order

Circuit Judge Ray Farr announces cancellation of all real estate foreclosure proceedings as Clare County Savings Bank remains under custodianship and receivership. Romani Rover Operetta staged at H S March 17

Clare High School prepares The Romani Rover operetta for March 17 in the High School Auditorium. The show features Lord Craven and Lady Constance with Romani characters, Bell Chorus, mixed male and female glee groups, solos, choruses, and dance numbers as part of The Lost Sir Gilbert Howe storyline. Tickets handled by the Music Council.

Pioneer resident marks 87th birthday on March 1

Julius W. Schaeffer celebrated his 87th birthday at home on East 6th Street with relatives including son J. W. Schaeffer Jr and daughter in law Mrs Emma Radcliffe. The party featured a birthday cake ice cream and social time. Mr and Mrs Schaeffer have lived in Clare since 1876 and were married over fifty eight years ago. Mrs Schaeffer is now 78.

County Red Cross notice on flour shortage at Clare Welfare Rooms

The chairman Rev Albert Dawe asks supervisors to ration flour for two or three weeks to the most needy families until the next supply arrives. Cooperation requested from those in charge to limit distribution.

Wedding Bells Ring for Three Young Couples

A pre Lenten ceremony at St. Cecilia Church united Julie Gendreyeske of Saginaw and Marjorie Horden of Clare, with Elmer Horden and Belorence Coleman as attendants. The brides plan to reside in Saginaw after brief weddings and a wedding breakfast. A Rose bush ceremony joined Beulah Smith with Earl Grace and Dorothy Smith with Manley Smith under Rev. B C Finkbeiner, with Helen Clark and Howard Grace as attendants. All couples from Isabella township Isabella county expect to settle there.

Federal Seed Loans Available From County Agent

Congress allocated 90 million dollars for emergency seed loans to farmers for the 1933 crop year. Apply to County Agricultural Agent P. D. Gibson in Harrison for an appointment to complete the application with guidance. Loans cover seed fertilizer fuel and feeds with 6 1 2 percent interest and require township supervisor recommendation.

Tenth District Meeting at Midland Tuesday

Berryhill Post No 166 of Midland hosts the Tenth Michigan Congressional District Legionnaires and Auxiliary at the Community Center Building. A 7 PM dinner costs fifty cents with no guest charge. Governor Comstock, Department Commander Gilmore and Department Adjutant Byers are invited. A large delegation from the area is urged to attend and publicize the event.

George S Leach Dies in Millersburg Friday

Millersburg resident and former Clare county president George S. Leach died last Friday evening at age 66. Born May 22, 1866 in Allegan county Michigan, he lived in Clare county since 1881 and worked as a lumber foreman. He left three sons, a sister, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Millersburg cemetery.

Farwell Seniors Stage Annual Play Girl Shy This Weekend

Mrs. W. H. Elden Dies After Long Clare Residency

Mrs. W H Elden, a Clare County pioneer for nearly six decades, died suddenly after visiting neighbors. Born Mary Steckert in Waterford Michigan on April 28 1855, she married Wm H Elden and moved to Clare with him shortly after their wedding. Survived by daughter Edna Flannagin and son Norris A Elden, she and her husband celebrated their gold en wedding anniversary nine years earlier.

Legion Auxiliary Party at Rudy Farm Home

American Legion Auxiliary members met Thursday afternoon February 23 at Catherine Rudy’s farm home for social relaxation with light entertainment. They swapped poems and songs, performed stunts, and shared an informal lunch of sandwiches salad home made ice cream and cakes after the gathering.

Oil drilling advances near Clare in Russell and Crowley farms

Oil activity continues around Clare with material hauled for a derrick to Russell farm No 2 three miles south and four west. Well No 1 on David Crowley farm west of Clare was spudded last week with casing landed and drill below 850 feet. Derrick for Marseilles estate well No 1 southwest of Crowley erected and spudded last week while Well No 2 on Clarence Thayer property spudded late last week. First pay likely as three walls finished and trials compare pay potential.
