The third annual rural eighth grade graduation exercises were held at Wilson State Park in Harrison on June 14. Weather was ideal and the 35 acre natural area looked its best under Willis Green’s care. Colorful displays and flags greeted graduates and visitors as the town celebrated the occasion.
Clare Gladwin County Rural Letter Carriers Association held its annual meeting on June 18 at Clare tourist park with strong representation. Officers elected for the next year are Chas. Stinchcombe as President, Mr. Harder of Beaverton as Vice President, and Jay O. Bellinger as Secretary Treasurer. Delegates to the state convention in East Jordan on July 25 26 and 27 include Chas. Stinchcombe Mr. Harder and Fred Hudson. A basket supply dietary followed and plans were made for an August meeting at Harrison State Park with a convention report and program to be presented.
On June 16 Mrs A J Doherty opened her Mee Ewan street home for a bridge party to aid the Library. Forty five dollars net from fifty cent tickets will fund interior decorations. fourteen auction tables and five Nusdrel played. prizes went to several local women. refreshments served. organizers praised townwide cooperation and planned a second party.
The Princess Theatre presents June 23 to 29 inclusive shows featuring Mad Foreign Cast with a tale of a man chasing venture and its futility. Her Ralston stars Sunday with various acts including Harold Lloyd in Speedy and Irene Rich in a comedy Beware of Married Men. Matinee Tuesday at 2:30 20c 10c. Evening 40c 20c. Coming July 17 18 The Legion of the Condemned.
John Blain Empey born in Napanee Ontario November 38 1850 lived in Vernonville Clare and Bakersfield California. He died June 12 1928 survived by wife Mary Jane Crossen three children three grandchildren and a sister in Minneapolis. Funeral Thursday at home with Rev W W Hurd and duets by Mrs Mulder and Miss Zuschnitt.
The first free clinic for Clare county crippled children was held at the Clare Congregational church on June 19. Thirty children were examined under the guidance of Mrs. Esther Martin of Ann Arbor and Dr. V Funston of Harper Hospital Detroit, with Miss Ruth Mason and Jacob Klaassen assisting. Local officials supported by the crippled children's group provided equipment and comfort to attendees and families. Continued on page five.
Mary Harger-Satison born February 4 1858 died June 14 1928 at age 70. She lived in Stack and Williams counties Ohio then Clare county Michigan Arthur township farm before moving to Clare. Survived by husband Homer Latson son Hiram granddaughter Alma Rodgers sister Mrs Abner Fisher and brother Riley. Funeral held at Baptist church conducted by Rev Frank Bates buried Cherry Grove cemetery. Relatives from Clinton Pontiac Lansing and other places attended.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce met at Phelps Cafeteria under rain with a modest turnout. Mrs. Nora J. Barnes served a chicken dinner, C. S. McBride of Detroit Creamery spoke on company plans, and members approved repainting the U.S. 10 sign, endorsed a new water source, and pledged to urge city officials to act at the council meeting.
Miss Cordelle Kemper Red Cross field representative for eastern Michigan visited Tuesday to plan September start. A public health nurse will serve the county at the opening of the school year with thorough coverage of each school and district. Parent cooperation is urged to ensure effectiveness.
Mrs Anna McPhail Duncan born November 9 1878 on a Clare farm died June 16 1928 at her Clare home aged 51 years 7 months 7 days. She lived in Clare until age 13 then moved to Armada Michigan later married James Duncan February 8 1900. She endured years of illness with fortitude and maintained a cheerful disposition. She joined First Congregational church Ze nobia Chapter Order of Eastern Star White Shrine Alma and leaves husband stepmother five brothers and many relatives. Funeral at residence Monday with Rev H B Johnson officiating Ze nobia Chapter O H S attended and burial at Cherry Grove cemetery.
The new postage rates effective July 1 cut private cards from 2 to 1 cent and set the rate for newspapers mailed single at 1 cent per two ounces, half the current charge.
Mr. S. McBride of Detroit announced final property transfers completed for the Detroit Creamery Company to locate in Clare. Plans call for an immediate milk receiving station with potential future condensary. the project promises a higher milk price market and benefit to local dairy interests as production grows.
The Eagle Aid society will hold an ice cream social on Tuesday June 26 on the lawn at the home of Mr and Mrs Wm Groeb.
Kansas City June 15. The Michigan delegation at the Republican national convention reports leadership shifts with Gov. Fred W. Green gaining influence in Hoover circles and hints of an appointment after his term ends. James E. Davidson wins reappointment as national committeeman. A. D. McBurney elected to the resolutions committee. Dennis Alward, of Clare, serves as reading clerk, a role he has held at every convention since 1900.
Rev Frank Kingdon pastor of Central Methodist Episcopal Church Lansing spoke at Clare high school commencement. His talk Four Working Ideals craftmanship education brotherhood and freedom urged pride in work, history learning, individuality, and world vision. Twenty nine graduates received diplomas with valedictorian Betty Groves and co salutatorians Kathleen Osborn and Lowell Shull delivering a dialogue based address.
Saint John’s Day falls on Sunday June 24 with lodges attending divine worship. John Q Look Clare Corning Farwell and John J Carton Harrigan will join Congregational church at ten o’clock where Rev H B Johnson will speak on American Masonry and citizenship. All nonregular churchgoers are invited.
Clare-Isabella Pomona Grange meets Advance Grange at Him Grove Thursday evening June 28. Refreshments of ice cream and cake will be served.
A letter from the Clare Michigan school superintendent explains the State Interscholastic Athletic Association rules on professionalism. It defines a professional team as one with paid players or where surplus funds are shared among players. The notice urges community cooperation to keep high school boys eligible.
A writer urges Michigan to back a new "Bee Line" highway from Montgomery through Birmingham to Nashville and Louisville. The route would be a direct north south corridor linking Gulf Coast cities with the Midwest, intersecting major east west highways and showcasing the Mam moth Cave and Cumberland Mountains. The project includes costly bridge work over the Tennessee River and other bold engineering along the route.
Marguerite Louise Irwin born October 5 1910 in Isabella township died at seventeen years eight months and eight days. She grew up on Stevenson Lake and in Clare and was a bright student on honor rolls. Her funeral at the Methodist church drew a vast crowd with Rev W W Hurd delivering the sermon and high school students providing music. Many relatives and friends from Saginaw Pontiac Flint Lake and other towns attended.
The Guild will host a supper at the Congregational church parlors on Wednesday evening June 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. The meal costs 40 cents or less and offers Roast Pork mashed potatoes brown gravy scalloped corn baked beans radishes pickles and rolls.
