The eighth in a series of Child Health Conferences will be held Thursday, June 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Health Office in Clare city hall. Mothers are invited to bring infants and preschool children for weighing, measuring, examination and optional immunization. Attendance is urged for current and future child health.
John Q. Look Lodge No. 404 F. and A. M. bought four $100 Defense Bonds, Series F, this week. The issue targets lodges and organizations supporting the United States War Stamp and Bond Drive.
Robert Hudson Struit of Owosso a contractor and former Clare county resident was hit by lightning twice in one week. He first fainted while supervising a plant at Owosso Sugar Company and recovered with a headache. The next day a bolt struck the hospital boiler room chimney injuring his eye. Ton Ercole narrowly escaped injury.
Clare and Gratiot county business leaders meet to organize retail dealers to sell War Stamps in their stores. A joint Clare Chamber of Commerce session schedules a June 26 dinner at Clare city hall to name community chairmen and promote a two percent sales target for stamp and bond purchases under Treasury guidance.
The Foland Optical Co. of Mt. Pleasant will close on Thursday afternoons during July and August.
Practical guidance to monitor and control garden pests. Examine leaves both surfaces for early damage and root or stem feeders. Draft boards prepare for the fifth selective service registration on June 30 1942 for 150 000 Michigan youths born 1922 1924. Main sites Clare Harrison and Farwell town halls open 7 am to 9 pm with extra sessions June 27 28 and 29 at Clare City Hall for those unable to register.

Clare County Rationing Board announces tire and tube allotments for June 9 across Clare and Harrison areas. Recipients include Ed R. Bruce police chief, Milford P. Thompson, oil field workers, Seiter Bros Lumber, and several farmers and contractors receiving retreaded or obsolete tires and tubes.
Walter Smedley reported twenty nine sheep missing after a dog attacked his flock a few miles west of Farwell. By Friday evening nineteen were found, all but one injured similarly. three neck wounds revealed the attack. Veterinary Sterling examined the injured animals and confirmed a large dog raid. Farmers remain on alert to prevent further losses.
Dr. Filson of Central Michigan College of Education will visit Clare city hall auditorium next Monday evening to instruct in modern civilian gas protection for Air Raid Wardens and Civilian Defense volunteers. He will spend three and a half hours sharing techniques with Harrigan defense training classes and local leaders. Attendance is urged to learn about defense responsibilities and equipment inspection outcomes will be shared with members.
State Highway Commissioner G Donald Kennedy told 32 county road commissions that wartime revenue losses may cut road maintenance funds by as much as 60 percent. The plan focuses on essential work to protect the highway system and concentrate on trunk lines and industrial routes. Officials discussed pooling equipment and coping with labor shortages amid the war effort.
The Michigan Conference of the Methodist Church that met in Grand Rapids recently restored Dr. John H. Hall as pastor of the Clare and Farwell Methodist Churches. The Halls arrived in Clare in December 1940 and have since attracted many friends. Salaries for next year have been increased, and church work continues to advance both spiritually and materially. The Woman's Day program at Clare featured Mrs. Wilma Wallington presiding, soprano Norma Fisher, and speakers Mrs. Avery Culie, Mrs. Fannie Schultz, and Mrs. Mabel Mulder. Ushers were Mrs. Fern Falconer and Mrs. Helen Maxwell.
One hundred Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, their families and friends gathered in Clare for Memorial Day tribute. Mrs Fannie Schultz presided as piano soloist Elva Lea McIntosh performed The Wayside Chapel. The group sang America and Michigan My Michigan amid speeches on home morale and civilian defense.
A 32 by 50 foot round basement cattle barn nears completion at Hildabrae Farm home of the John W Dunlops just west of the city. The steel roof arches between concrete walls forming upper sidewalls of the barn. It will house 100 cattle stalls and 90 ton hay storage with granary carriage and harness rooms. Electric service and running water will be installed. Contractor William Smiling Bill Zinser of Wise Township.
A meeting of the United Dairy Farmers is scheduled at Loomis Community Hall on Tuesday evening June 23rd at 8 30 oclock. All welcome to attend.
Sec Lieut Homer W Lear son of Mr and Mrs Carl Lear of this city is an Air Corps Flight Instructor at Randolph Field Texas. He enlisted in the Air Corps in Kansas over two years ago and was called into service in January of last year. He received primary training at Muskogee and basic training at Randolph Field and graduated from Kelly Field in August last year with wings and the rank of Second Lieutenant. His brother Harold Lear left Friday for duty in the U S Navy and is assigned as a Pearl Harbor Avenger at Great Lakes Naval Training Station.
Christian Loeffler, longtime resident, was convicted by a Bay City Federal Court jury of urging insubordination of U S military forces. He received a six year sentence at Terre Haute Federal Prison after the court denied a new trial.

The annual Clare Gladwin and Midland Association meeting was held in Clare's Masonic Temple on Thursday at 2 30 pm. Mrs Iva Fisher opened, Doris Empey led community singing, Nettie Shepherd offered invocation, and flag ceremonies preceded welcomes by Greta Masten and Mary Waugh. A short business session followed with reports and a program including solos.
Clare Rod and Gun Club officials meet to designate a delegate for the M U C C convention at Johnsons Rustic Tavern in Houghton Lake on June 20 and 21. A banquet is set for Sunday at 6 30 PM and reservations are requested through Harold Loomis by Saturday night.
