Michigan to Bid Over Six Million in Road and Bridge Projects

State highway commissioner Murray D. Van Wagoner announced bids on more than 6 million dollars of road and bridge contracts in 29 counties. The letting at Lansing’s Prudden Auditorium is set for June 27 with over 300 contractors expected and work to begin by July 15.

Chief Haley’s fire crew pull off timed false alarm test

Chief Albert Haley of the Times Fire Department staged a 1 PM Wednesday false alarm to prove crew punctuality. Despite citywide work, both engines reached the Auto Parts Co. four blocks away in exactly three minutes with 500 feet of hose laid, and Haley says he is confident his firefighters can meet any department in the state.

Windover Lake Hotel Opens to Public and Tourists

The Windover Lake Hotel on Clare county's Windover Lake has been restored as a resort hotel. Owner L. Perkins of Alma and managers Mr and Mrs Bert H Walker oversaw spring remodeling and grounds work. The facility offers electric service, three showers, six cabins with private toilet and light, a 120-seat dining room, and meals by reservation. Boats added for fishing and bathing. located three miles west of Lake George on a Freeman township gravel road.

Veterans Bonds Delivery Set for June Dates

Postmaster Francis Jackson indicates the Chicago office will mail Veterans Bonus Bonds on June 15 with delivery to rural ex servicemen on June 16 to 18. Bonds must be received in person and cashing procedures are available at the post office. Postmaster General James A Farley will broadcast June 18 to explain final delivery and payment plans for Adjusted Service Bonds.

New tourist camp rises north of Clare on Grovenor site

Roy Joslin buys the Grovenor tract south of Clare on US-27 and is converting it into a tourist camp. Work crews build ten overnight cabins arranged in a semicircle around a central community building with showers, toilets and running water. A 500 gallon automatic pump will supply water. cabins are 12 feet square and furnished. Landscaping will follow, with a free camping area after clearing a hardwood grove, and a supply store and home planned. Contractor Herb Randall aims to have part of the cabins ready by July 4. The project is welcomed as a community asset for tourist traffic.

Tri-District Legion Meeting and Picnic at Grayling June 14

Sunday, June 14 marks the American Legion and Auxiliary meeting at Hanson Military Reservation Grayling for an all day picnic and convention. Representatives from the Ninth, Tenth and Lower Eleventh Districts will gather to view the reservation hosted by Grayling Post and Unit with Traverse City Post initiating the plan. The event aims to energize attendance ahead of a possible State Convention and invites Legionnaires and Auxiliary members along with family and friends to bring a basket for the event.

A Saginaw Wholesale Merchants Bureau visit to Clare featured a banquet at the Doherty Hotel with about 100 attendees. Mayor Jesse Hampton welcomed guests as Rev Albert Dawe led invocation and Bert Tromley directed singing. Ralph Schust spoke about regional business ties and future cooperation before a motor procession to Grayling and Alpena.

Clare Baptist Church Bible School Opens Monday

The fourth annual Daily Vacation Bible School at Clare Baptist Church in Dover opens Monday June 15 at 9 00 a m in the church rear Gospel tent for ten days of Bible study. Classes cover all ages with teachers, souvenirs for Monday attendees, and a Schofield Bible prize for those who pass exams and attendance requirements.

Northern Michigan Road Commissioners to Hold Clare Convention

Clare hosts the Northern Michigan Road Commissioners Association twelfth annual convention on September 25 and 26 with about five hundred delegates. Officials from 33 counties, including Kent and Wayne as honorary members, will attend along with guests from Chicago and New York City.
