Clare voters approve 17 mill school levy in close turnout

In Clare 395 of 2400 registered voters cast ballots as John Meyers finished third with 109 votes and Mervyn Maxwell 101. Don Blow, a Farwell teacher and businessman, tallied 41 votes. Voters approved a 17 mill operational levy to run schools, with 274 yes to 151 no. A proposed $2.2 million bond for a new high school failed earlier, 509 no to 368 yes.

Coleman and Harrison Clash in Town School Election

In Clare Coleman approved a 17 mill operational levy while Harrison voters rejected a 2.2 million bond. Glenn Thomas retained the Clare School Board seat with 269 votes, defeating Bern ie Wyman who had 156 votes. Wyman will join the board, and she will join on wages study duties for non instructional staff. Clare turnout was low at about 20 percent, with Harrison near 40 percent turnout in favor of the levy defeat.

County Plans Expanded Summer Playground Budget

The city recreation commission and a citizen group led by Mrs. Joe Johnston seek 2000 more dollars this year to reach a 4000 dollar budget for playground and waterfront programs. The city provides 2000, the school district supplies sites and athletic equipment, and the community seeks the remaining funds from local organizations and industry.

Four Schools Leave US-10 Conference

The US-10 Athletic Conference will dissolve with Coleman Ewart Farwell leaving Clare Reed City and Chippewa Hills to seek new league partners. Disbanding set for 1971 72 unless earlier agreement among members. Reed City and Chippewa Hills aim to stay in competition with Clare. Coleman voters chose three new school board members. Clare budget faces cuts as Clare County approves lower than requested millage, reducing 1970 operating funds by about 8 percent.

School Board Delays Expansion of Teacher Aide Program

Clare Board of Education approved the elementary teacher aide program for now but will not expand to K 6 next year. Principal Al Shumm praised the plan while Superintendent Richard Snyder warned about cost and facilities and urged one more year of operation before a definitive decision. The board authorized continued operation and set millage considerations with final budgeting in October.

City Housing Plan Aims For Elderly Units In Clare

A special study committee urged Clare to base public housing for seniors on Reed City’s model. Reed City opened 60 unit project. Clare eyeing 100 units with initial city focus and later county expansion. Ground level design, on site services, weekly medical visits, and $35 to $70 rents projected with tax relief and future federal aid.

Board Decides On MMCC Rule

Education approves two resolutions giving autonomy to Mid-Michigan Community College over Area Vocational-Technical center. They urge restricting use of the facility to systems that participated in equipment purchases under the May 13, 1968 intergovernmental contract.
