Chicago Bridge and Iron Builds New Clare Water Tower
Chicago Bridge and Iron returns to Clare to build a new water tower next to the old one. The $100,000 structure was bid low at 100,650 last spring and forms part of Clare’s sewer and water upgrades funded partly by federal aid. City Manager Glen Cain notes the project follows 62 years after the company’s first Clare venture.

Mid-Michigan Community College, near Clare nine miles north on US 27, prepares fall move to a new wooded campus with 600 classrooms and expands by hosting classes in Clare County building basement and Harrison Library. Dean Allan Nichols notes 217 spring enrollments with 15 percent over age 35, and a forecast of 450 to 500 students next year.

Mishap Kills William Rice
William E. Rice owner of the Farwell Bar died in an early morning automobile crash on Grass Lake Road near Windover Lake. He was traveling alone and struck a tree four miles southwest of Lake George. Funeral services are set at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Midland with Father Ryan officiating. He served in the Korean War and is survived by his wife Marge Hansen and several relatives.

Two Clare School Board seats are open in the annual election at the High School building. Six candidates filed petitions for the two posts, including incumbent Glenn Thomas. Polls run 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters must be resident, qualified electors registered with their city or township clerk. Glenn Thomas, Quality Control Manager at Holley Carburetor, serves as treasurer and is a four year board member. Don Blow, a Kansas native, teaches at Farwell schools and runs Don's Asphalt Maintenance, with wife Jean and two children.
