Clare County school election set for Monday

Annual school elections are scheduled in Clare County on Monday with polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Clare High School. Two seats on the Clare Board of Education are up, plus a bond fund transfer proposal to move 19 249 dollars from the 1962 debt retirement fund to a building and site fund.

Final tax mill allocation set by county board

The Tax Allocation Board finalized the county 15 mill division with 6.25 mills to the county and 7.99 to the schools. Townships vary up to one mill with .2 to the intermediate district and three districts may levy an extra mill under the split district provision. Deadline for appeal is June 22. Ken Barnes reports on seeking a 10 percent credit for Harrison sewer and water planning from HUD.

Mrs. Born wife of Glen D. Born USN retired is a Gladwin High School graduate who attended Central Michigan University for two and a half years. The Borns live three miles north of Clare with three children. two in public school and the third due to start kindergarten in the fall. They moved to Clare five years ago from Norfolk Virginia where Mr. Born was stationed. She is the immediate past president of the Clare PTA and a charter member of the Clare Area Scholarship Association serving on the board for three years. City budget II approved for Clare and library funds

The 1971-72 Clare budget totaling 460 075 was approved by the City Commission after a public hearing. Property tax remains at 14 mills, producing about 194 764 based on a 14 643 910 valuation. Library budget receipts are 20 775.95 with expenditures of 24 840, debated by the library board over rising costs.

Storm Kills 10 Heifers in Clare Thunderstorm

A Clare farmer lost 10 Holstein heifers struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm Saturday. The cattle sheltered under a tree on Charles Kleinhardt’s property, part of a herd of 85. All 10 died instantly and were not salvageable, weighing 850 to 1050 pounds each.

New Harrison pallet plant breaks ground on Larch Road

Ground was broken Monday for a 54 by 120 foot wood processing plant for Harrison Pallet and Box Co. Howard Wilson owns the firm which aims to open by July 1. The site near Larch Road will add full automatic equipment and later wood chip and lumber production, expanding staff from 14 to about 30.
