Former Clare teacher Estella Holden dies in Reed City

Estella Wise Holden long-time Michigan educator dies at her Reed City home after a life of teaching thirty years in rural and Clare schools. Born August 9 1879 in Chase she taught across Reed City Plymouth and Clare, was active in the Methodist church Sunday School Garden Club and Eastern Star, and survived by two sons three grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church Reed City with Rev. Walter Haston officiating. burial Woodland Cemetery.

Jail Terms for Probation Violations and Drunk Driving

Ronald Lee Taylor of Clare was jailed 30 days after pleading guilty to probation violation and was fined. he had been placed on probation in April for destroying mailboxes west of Farwell. Scott Hemstreet of Clare was fined 53.50 after pleading guilty to drunk driving in Farwell and surrendered his license. August Kolberg of Harrison was fined 18.50 after pleading guilty to leaving the scene of an accident near Shady Lane. Chas W Friesner of Clare was fined 20.00 after pleading guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Farwell.

Little Carolyn Marie McPhall Died At Five

Carolyn Marie McPhall five year old daughter of Frank and Margaret McPhail died at home June 4 1951 in Vernon township after a brief illness. She enjoyed flowers and received many gifts on her fifth birthday from friends across Michigan. Survived by parents a brother Charles Francis grandparents Otis McPhail and Thomas Ackerman and many relatives. Funeral 2:00 PM Wednesday at Doherty Funeral Home with Rev N C Davis officiating interment Cherry Grove Cemetery. Russell Thiraton arranged.

One Called For Final Induction In Clare County

Leonard L. Haton of Harrison leaves June 20 for induction into the armed services as Clare countys June quota of one. Local clerk Mrs. Harvey Hartshorn has not received calls for pre induction physicals or final induction in July. Nearby counties quotas in July include Gladwin two Isabella four Mecosta two Midland five Missaukee two Osceola three and Roscommon none.

Reeder Among Korean War Dead Returning Home

The remains of Cpl. James A. Reeder of Clare are among 374 Korean War dead being returned to the United States. A War Department telegram told his mother Mrs. J. A. Reeder. Also returning aboard the Lawrence Victory are 12 Michigan service members including Pfc. Richard H. Mohowitsch of Midland. Funeral plans await arrival of the body in California.

Two Will Be Sentenced On Grave Counts

The People v Myrtle Shumway saw a circuit court verdict of guilty on an assault with intent to murder charge after a two hour jury deliberation. Shumway shot her husband through the neck in February. Forrest Strong pleaded guilty to statutory rape involving a 15 year old Lake girl. Both cases referred to Probation Officer Morris W Shaw for investigation before sentencing.

Tight pitching marks Central League games

Mt. Pleasant Green Sox edged Seaton 4 2 at Island Park on Memorial Day with Leaton scoring in the second and fifth. Vaughn Geiger held Seaton to five hits while Keebaugh allowed three safeties amid errors. Oil City beat Farwell 11 8 and Leaton beat Bear City 3 1. Sunday's schedule lists Farwell at Mt Pleasant Seaton at Oil City Marion at Rosebush Reed City at Harrison.

Clare County Softball League Opens With Close Contests

The Clare County Softball League 1951 opened with Clare Mfg defeating Dan McDonald 13 to 5 as Brown & Bruckart edged Dover 8 to 7 in a disputed seventh inning. Exhibition games followed, including DeMolay beating Rangers 11 to 3 and Mt. Pleasant Moose topping Farwell 16 to 15. Standings list B&B, DeMolay, Clare Mfg, Rangers, Farwell, and Dover with upcoming games scheduled through June 15.

Fishing Without License Costs 12.00 In Court

Gerald Taylor 17 of Lake R 3 was arrested for fishing on Windover Lake without a license and fined 12.00 after pleading guilty in Municipal Court. Jim Trimodig of Lansing was arrested for fishing without a license on Lake George and fined 12.00 after pleading guilty in Municipal Court.

Citizens State Bank Installs Air Conditioning System

A Kellér's Commercial Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Service installation in The Citizens State Bank last fall began operation June 1. The electrically refrigerated system, separate from the heating, supplies conditioned air to all rooms, including the directors' room, with air refreshed every three minutes when doors and windows are closed. The seven and a half ton unit was installed by Kellér's in Coleman.

St Cecilia’s Graduates Ten In 1951 Class

St Cecilia’s School awards diplomas to ten graduates in a morning ceremony at St Cecilia’s Church. Fr Sruba presided with a High Mass sermon, nine graduates honored as Nil Kajfer departed for Europe earlier. Breakfast followed in the rectory with Fr Sruba and Sisters in attendance.

Wilson School to Close Next Year After Voters Approve

Residents of the Wilson School district vote 28 to 26 to close the one room school a mile south of Clare and send students by bus to Farwell and Clare. Speakers cited falling state aid and enrollment as the reason, with transportation and costs covered by state funds.

Rose Newsom born October 10 1871 in Clinton County Michigan died June 3 1951 at Lake George Michigan aged 79 years seven months and 24 days. She was a pioneer resident known as Rose a member of Eastern Star widow of Frank Newsom with two stepdaughters and no close relatives. Blossom Festival Comes to Mackinac Island This June

Vacation activities on Mackinac Island start Sunday June 10 with the Lilac Festival. A full day of entertainment music and gala revelry features a midday floral parade with a reviewing stand near the Chippewa Hotel. Horse drawn tours and bicycle transport highlight the blooms while ferries from Mackinaw City and St Ignace run six round trips daily beginning at 9:00 a.m. Motor vehicles are prohibited on the island.

Dearborn Man Fatally Hurt in Traffic Crash

Walter J Wydra 37 of Dearborn died at Glare General Hospital after a three car crash 10 miles north of Clare on US 27 last Friday morning. Six others injured in one of the area’s worst highway accidents of the summer.

Kiwanians View Fishing Film “Fishin' For Fun”

Wednesday evening the Clare Kiwanis Club screened Fishin' For Fun a two reel sound motion picture featuring Bem Hardesty. The Detroit Fisher Body Division supplied the film described as a major contribution to fishing lore. It showcases angling for trout bass bonefish sailfish and tarpon with scenes from Northern Michigan New Jersey Florida and other locales.
