Arthur Chandanais of Clare loses his car when two 16 year olds steal it and drive to Midland Clare Hart Ludington before police catch them. The youths admit breaking into the garage taking the key and using checks from another car. Chandanais thanks Art Damath Insurance for the quick paid checkup and wash on the recovered vehicle.
City water restrictions limit lawn irrigation to designated times. Watering allowed 6 am to 9 am and 6 pm to 9 pm to conserve supplies.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Benson will visit Michigan State College on Thursday August 5 to address farm families from across Michigan. The 1:00 p.m. event at the Michigan Artificial Breeders Cooperative on Forest Road marks the 10th anniversary of the ABG with representatives from Grange Farm Bureau Agricultural Conference Future Farmers of America and other groups expected to attend.
The Public Service Commission hears Michigan Bell's case for a rate increase citing $30 million in increased investment and over $2 million annual rise in operating costs plus a $1.7 million drop in earnings since the test year ending September 30. Attorney Jack H. Shuler argues rates are not adequate to cover 1904 costs and a fair return on expanded investment. The original request in June 1953 sought an average 3 cent per day rise per telephone.
Philip A. Hart, Democratic lieutenant governor hopeful, piloted a helicopter to attend picnics in Macomb Oakland and Wayne counties. Campaign aides say the airborne approach was an experiment to reach an overbooked schedule, with Hart planning to use the chopper again when needed.

Adam Reger died in Saginaw with services at Thurston Funeral Home and burial at Cherry Grove Cemetery. Samuel Ginsberg of Clare, 70, died at Clare Hospital with Rabbi M Robert Symes officiating and his widow surviving. John Hmpey, 60, longtime Clare resident, died at the Veterans Hospital in Saginaw. services planned at Thurston Funeral Home. Further obituary will appear next week.
Arthur D. Johnson, Clare County Surveyor since 1902, will not seek re election this August. At 84 he passes the GOP ballot to Walter S. Moore of Harrison after a 52 year run with 25 campaigns. He laid out roads drains and lots across Clare and nearby counties and remains available for future work.

City streets in Clare were resurfaced with tar and gravel covering 50 blocks at a cost just under $8 000. Holes were filled first then a continuous topping process followed by a rolling finish. Mrs Ruth Herron of Clare learns her son Pfc Jessie E Herron was killed in Korean action on July 14 1953 after a year of being listed as missing. Herron served since 1951 with the 555th Field Artillery and had a brother Frank in Korea.

The Clare County Republican Women host a tea to introduce wives of four Republican gubernatorial candidates to local women. Tea chair Mrs. W. N. Byers presided from three to five pm at the Clare Methodist Church. Guests included wives and representatives from Harrison Gladwin Ewart Colemmi Barwell, plus Rae Hooker national committeewoman.
The Soudiés of Medola Country Club joined Clare Women at Twin Wilms Tuesday, with Clare winning all foursomes. Edith Holmes of Big Rapids won low gross and had low score on three blind holes, while Lucille Haley took low Bros. score for Clare. A six way tie followed for low score on three blind holes, resolved by a putting contest won by Beatrice Lange. Several Big Rapids ladies stayed for another nine holes after lunch. The handicap tournament begins Wednesday with matches already underway and Mrs Olson guessing within one stroke to her score earning a ball.
