Ground was broken on July 10 for the Clare Rod and Gun Club house to be built on a city‑leased tract across Dover Road from the Municipal Airport. The 24 by 24 foot structure will be expanded as needed and is funded by club fundraising. Members held a work meeting on the grounds with a lunch afterward.
Monthly Social Security benefits totaling 9588 were paid to 279 Clare county residents in February 1951, with 5542 to 184 retired workers over 65 and the rest to dependents or survivors. Traverse City SSA Manager William E. LaRack noted 177,345 dollars were paid to 6247 residents of 15 counties served that month.
Michigan's Health Department offers a hay fever map and chart showing areas with low ragweed pollen. The Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula have been pollen-free regions for a decade, while southern Michigan sees pollen rise mid July. The department based its map on five years of data from a 1940 60 survey and will send copies of Ragweed in Michigan on request.
The Sentinel delayed publication due to a late job completion pushing the press time from Thursday to Friday this week, affecting the newspaper’s usual schedule.
J J Green completed a deal last week to buy the McEwan Street building that housed his clothing and shoe store for 26 years. The property, long owned by the W P Lewises, was purchased from C Harris. The Greens plan to enlarge and remodel the store.
In Clare County Softball League action Dover defeated DeMolay in extra innings as Dave Wainman drove in the winning run in the eighth. Clare Mfg beat Farwell 5-4 and 16-2 in twilight and 9:00 games respectively, while DeMolay won a protest over Clare Mfg and held a firm position atop the standings.
Harrison High School 4-H festival at Harrison gym featured band, majorettes, and student acts. Mann Siding group led by Karen Stephison and Melba Jean Beavers won first with a piano solo and strings. Carol Kleinhardt took second. James Van Houten earned third on trumpet. Winners received trips and cash prizes. proceeds totaled 33.88 dollars to aid the club house fund.
Mary Eliza Maxwell Lytle died at her Clare home on Sunday July 22 1951 at age 92 years 1 month 28 days. Born in Dearborn Michigan she married Randall B Lytle February 20 1896 and had five children. Survived by three daughters Loretta Harrold Gertrude Lytle and Florence Field two grandchildren three great grandchildren and other relatives. A Methodist this longtime Clare resident lived there since 1915, previously in Pontiac.
Ralph Purvis Sr. of Lake George died July 22 at University Hospital Ann Arbor at age fifty six. Funeral services were July 24 at Osgood's Funeral Home St Johns with burial in St Johns Cemetery. He is survived by wife Blanche two daughters Mrs Kenneth Russell Milan and Mrs Ed Zimmerman Lansing six sons Harold Dundee Eugene Farwell Ralph Lake George Richard Springfield Raymond Lansing Mahlon Jackson twenty seven grandchildren three sisters and four brothers.
Herbert Stuber of Clare and three Dow Chemical representatives fished aboard the Lively Lady from Buzzards Bay. They landed 12 striped bass weighing 12 to 42 pounds in Wellfleet Cape Cod Bay area. The first bite came at 7 30 am with steady action until 11 36 am. The trip was described as a big fish spree with heavy tackle and strong first fish.
Miss Jane Bicknell daughter of Mr and Mrs Mark Bicknell received word from the Scholarship Board of Michigan State College she has been awarded a scholarship for the next year The award is based on her scholastic attainment at Clare High School from which she graduated last June The scholarship will be renewed for four years at the college with requirement of a set scholastic average.
The Congregational Church in Clare will host three visiting ministers in August while Rev. Oscar Olson is away. Rev. Richard Allen Davis of Jackson Michigan speaks August 5, followed by Rev. R H M Augustine from Buffalo New York August 12. Rev. Ralph Hall Ferris of East Lansing preaches August 19 and 26 before heading to Tombstone Arizona. Morning worship lasts about an hour.
Three area youths enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Tuesday at the Mt. Pleasant recruiting office. Robert Curtis of R-3 Clare and Holdie Sarkoui of R-1 Lake joined Don ald G. Rathbern of R-1 Lake, all accepted at Detroit and headed to Samson Air Force Base Geneva New York.
Paul W Hilyard Harry T Hil yard and James Elder were arrested last Friday in Freeman township by Assistant District Conservation Supervisor Wayne Tenant. They were arraigned and pled guilty in Municipal Court to transporting and possessing firearms during deer season and were fined 50 dollars each.
Miss Sue Thomas of Saline, 17, daughter of Mrs Helen Thomas, wins a Rotary Club essay contest on The World We Want and will spend ten weeks in France living with Rotarians, attending schools, and traveling. Her mother is Nelle Maxwell, a Clare High School graduate and former teacher.
Winnie Tasker a Clare resident for 78 years died in Clare General Hospital. Born Winifred Merrill January 25 1868 in Elm Hall Gratiot County she moved to Clare in 1873 and later married William K Tasker on February 17 1891. She was active in Congregational church and Ladies Union and mourned by Thurston Funeral Home with services held at the Congregational Church.
Christian Reger born October 26 1879 in Breddach Germany died July 22 1951 after illness. He came to the United States in 1891 settling in Sheridan township and married Mabel Huntley in 1902. Survived by wife five sons two daughters twenty three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. funeral held at Clare Church of God with Rev Elza Beery officiating. Last Friday a muck fire started on Section 385 at the Homey Douglas farm near Arthur Township. Fire towers traced the blaze to about 2:00 p m and conservation crews with neighbors battled for about 20 hours to control the surface fire. The fire burned about two acres in a 40 acre muck patch before being destroyed by Saturday night with final checks through Thursday morning. Citizens are urged to be cautious with smoking and campfires during the hazardous fire period.
Leaton beat Mt. Pleasant Green Sox 14 to 9 to stay atop the Central Michigan Baseball League standings. Bud Bissell homered for the Sox. Keebaugh pitched all the way for Leaton. Other scores include Beal City 8 Marion 2, Rosebush 6 Oil City 5 in 11 innings, and Houghton Lake 12 Harrison 9. Standings show Leaton ahead, with Mt. Pleasant, Beal City, Rosebush, and Houghton Lake following.
Mrs Sam Garfield captured the 195% ladies championship on Twin Elis course last week defeating Mrs William Lange Mus José phine Anderson and Mrs Albert Haley Kmnerato in the championship flight. Consolation flight went to Mrs Wm Langey over Mrs G W Hanna and Ms Mark Bickel. First flight winner was Mrs Norris Hiden over Mrs Tink Frey Mrs James Olson and Mrs William Bowley. Second flight winner was Mrs BE A Anderson over Drs James Ryan and Mrs BE Anderson. Club meeting followed with nine holes and lunch.
Extension specialist Clarence Prentice says storage and government programs help Michigan wheat growers avoid harvest price drops. Farmers may obtain a purchase agreement or loan by January 31 1952 with costs of 0.5 and 1.0 cents per bushel respectively, and loans or purchases protect against losses if cash prices rise above the guaranteed level.
The Clare High School Board of Education outlines a supervised summer program for children up to high school age on the Clare High School athletic field. Led by Nancy Wild, the program runs weekdays with baseball, softball, croquet, kickball, and tennis, and features a five week point based contest with prizes. Transportation and supervision are provided, and excursions to Wilson State Park are planned with a lifeguard on duty. Students praise the program and its emphasis on good sportsmanship and activity.
Ray Smith of Clare, Alabama, was arrested by City Police on a drunk and disorderly charge, second offense. He was arraigned before Justice Wats B. Dunlop in Municipal Court and pled guilty, receiving a $29 fine and 20 days in the county jail.
Reports from the region detail multiple vehicle collisions near Rosépush and Clare. William L. Phillips and Albert G. Seiter sustained minor damages, with Phillips ticketed for failing to yield. Other crashes on US-27 and US-10 caused modest damages. Elienor Madison was bruised. A boy, Monty Blain, aged eight, suffered severe injuries after a path-crossing incident near Dalton Ohio.
