Tips For Reducing Wheat Losses In Lodged Battle With Combines
Clare county farmers face high losses when combining lodged wheat. Michigan State University engineer Robert White cites butter bar losses and recommends adjusting the reel, using canvas strips to guide grain, and using equipment for lodged grain. Schroeder notes speed and cutter-bar height impact losses, advising care in downed grain and slow clearance of straw. He estimates losses at 1 to 4 percent, about 18 to 20 kernels per square foot equaling a bushel per acre.
