Clare softball fans saw two good games on Friday July 7 as Farwell met Harrison and Temple faced Houghton's Drugs. Harrison won 5 2 in a pitcher’s battle while Temple rallied from a 2 0 first inning deficit for a 9 5 win. Tuesday games were postponed by rain and rescheduled.
James Dewey of Mills Bros. announces the Mills Bros. Circus will perform at Clare Stockyards Grounds on Tuesday August 8 1944 with shows at 2 and 8 pm. Adults 90c children 60c. advance student tickets 30c details and tax included. Proceeds aid the local American Legion and returning soldiers. Big Burma the elephant headlines.
War Bond drive continues in Clare County as July purchases of series H F G and C bonds still count toward quotas though the Fifth War Loan campaign ended. Beatrice Paul Eleanor Lehr Mabel Horton and Nellie Doherty are commended for leading sales in business and residential districts.
John J Rhodes longtime Arthur township resident died after a brief illness at Clare Hospital He was born October 3 1865 in Terrington England and died July 7 1944 at age 78 He and Mary Jane Styan married in 1893 came to America worked for his uncle then farmed in Arthur township Funeral services were held at Arthur town hall and Thurston Funeral Home with burial in Arthur Township Cemetery
The Clare P T A Club sponsors a school dance in the gym this Friday July 14 from 8 30 to 12 00. Former coach Leo Brown will play saxophone with Jack Rodabaugh on drums and Patricia Lucas at the piano ensuring good music for students and parents. Parents urged to cooperate and contribute to the event’s expenses.
The Democratic County Convention will be held at Harrison on Monday July 17 at 8 30 p m BWT. Marie Beemer Bailey is chairman.
A motorcycle crash south of Clare on US-27 killed 17 year old Donald Sorg of Fostoria after gasoline sprayed from a damaged tank ignited. His sister Margaret Sorg escaped with minor burns. A separate crash near Harrison on US-27 injured five riding in two cars. LaVoy Sigsbee of Clio and Dr. Albert Miller of Gladstone led to multiple injuries treated at Clare Hospital. State Police investigated both incidents.
The Clare school district met in the auditorium with Dr. A. E. Mulder presiding. Secretary George White reported strong finances and high scholastic standards as Trustee J. Stuart Bicknell won a new three year term. The board's request for nine mills for operations and four for debt service passed.
Charles Strange kept a kangaroo mouse alive in captivity for about two weeks by feeding it cheese and crackers. The three inch body with a five inch tail and limbs measured a half inch and two inches respectively. The mouse and its mate with four young were captured at Clyde Shilling farm.
A miscellaneous shower will be held at the Harpsters home on Wednesday evening July 19. The event features a pot luck lunch and invites all who wish to attend at Pratt Community.
Official notice from U S Naval Forces in Europe reports Merle D Archambault Ship's Cook Third Class nineteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Jennings Archambault Clare was part of the American Assault Force that invaded France. He attended Clare High School and his brother William serves at Sampson New York.
Willard Leslie Colosky aged sixteen months died after being struck by a backing car at his Garfield township home. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon. he died at 7:30 p.m. at a local hospital. Survived by mother and father stationed at Camp Wolters Texas, his grandparents and other relatives. Funeral services were held at Gleaner hall Lake with Rev. Redman officiating. burial in Brinton Cemetery. Thurston & Son had charge of arrangements.
Captain Neil D. Maxwell of Clare awaits a new duty assignment at Army Air Forces Redistribution Station No. 2 in Miami Beach. The two week layover includes rest and evaluation by medical and classification officers to place him in the best suited role. Maxwell, a transport pilot and supply officer, flew 206 missions in the Southwest Pacific and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, and the Presidential Unit Citation with cluster. He is a Clare High School and Butler University graduate, husband of Mildred Maxwell.

Twenty six women golfers met at Twin Elms for a Handicap Tournament. Mrs. KE A Anderson won the first group with one stroke under handicap, while Mrs Kenneth Borro led the second group. A luncheon followed and new members Mrs Charles Hahn and Mrs Skinner were welcomed. The Claré women will travel to Mt Pleasant next Wednesday to play the women there.
Mr and Mrs Robert Burns mourn Sgt William Burns killed in action in France on June 17 at age 20. A Hayes Agricultural High School 1941 graduate, he enlisted December 1942 and trained at Camp Taccoa Fort Benning and Camp Mackall as a paratrooper. He sailed overseas January 20 1944 and served in England before the invasion. He has a brother in the Army in Florida and a younger brother and three sisters at home.
Due to a diagnosed case near Clare and at the urging of Dr. De Kleine, State Health Commissioner, a smallpox vaccination clinic will be held at Farwell school next Tuesday afternoon July 18 from 1 to 4 oclock. All unvaccinated Farwell residents are urged to get inoculated or see their family physician to prevent an outbreak.

Albert Allen born 1859 in Milan Michigan died July 11 at age 85 after a long decline. He pioneered Clare county settling near Colonville and later at the old homestead. survived by wife Mary and eight children, 22 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2:00 pm Thurston Funeral Home with Rev. Kleinhardt and Rev. Honderich.
Last half year license plates for passenger and commercial vehicles go on sale Saturday July 1 in Art Damoth Insurance agency Clare and the County Treasurer's office Harrison. Motorists with first half year 1944 plates must return them to obtain new plates.
Vernon Brown, five term Michigan House veteran and former Auditor General, secured the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor by a 42,000 vote margin over Dr. Eugene C. Keyes. Final returns show Brown with 164,525 to Keyes 116,172 across 3358 precincts. James H. Lee remained unopposed for the Democratic lieutenant governor post.
A chest x ray clinic arranged by Health District Seven and the Michigan Tuberculosis Association will be held Wednesday July 19 from 1 to 4 pm at the county health unit office in Clare city hall. Arnold J. Linden will direct the portable unit and those with positive tuberculin tests will receive chest x rays. The service costs 2.60 dollars per day.
