Clare Golfers Host Two-Ball Mixed Foursome
On July fourth at Twin Elms Clare golfers staged a two-ball mixed foursome arranged by Sports Chairmen Mrs Wehrly and Dan McDonald. Nine holes were played with fanfare and a picnic lunch by Mrs Wehrly. Winners were Wad Norris Miden and Mrs Width Bowlér with 245. Harry Wehrly and Mrs R Howlett placed second. Pat McDonald and Mrs Wehrly were third with 247.

Pioneer resident Kittie McKinley dies at Clare Home
Miss Kittie McKinley longtime Dover Clare resident died Sunday at her east Fourth street home after five years of ill health. Born November 23 1872 in Bluffton Ohio she helped run mail between Dover and Clare and was an Eagle Church of God member. Funeral was held at Thurston Funeral Home with Rev. Albert Dawe, burial in Cherry Grove cemetery.

Joseph Stevens of Nottawa township held the state’s top producing registered Holsteins for the year July 1 1940 to July 1 1941. His herd averaged 15084 pounds of milk and 557 pounds of butterfat with four-year averages of 13074 pounds and 501 pounds. The National Dairy Association recognized the two year average of 14534 pounds milk and 584 pounds butterfat. Feed cost averaged 47e per 100 pounds of milk and 13c per pound of butterfat.

Car Crash Near US-10 Narrows Escape for Two
Roberta O Neil 18 and Norman Sutton 19 both of this city narrowly avoided serious injuries when their car ran off M 115 six miles northwest of US 10. The vehicle owned by Leo Beard of Ithaca was wrecked. Police investigated the Tuesday evening crash. Francis Loomis was also involved in a separate Averill crash while driving east on US 10 near Averill Saturday evening and plunged into a driveway ditch to avoid a collision.

Clare man pleads guilty in mother killing case
Oscar Lowery, 42, fatally shot his 71 year old mother Mrs Elijah Lowery eight miles northeast of Clare after a dispute over employment papers. He confessed to Coroner Friz saying he grabbed a twelve gauge shotgun and shot her in the back as she stood about 20 feet away. He claimed no premeditation and planned not to shoot himself. Lowery formerly stayed at Traverse City state hospital and was bound over to Circuit Court for sentencing. Funeral services for Mrs Lowery were held at the Clare Church of God with burial in Coleman cemetery.
