First fatality recorded on old M-61 near Harrison
A Pontiac man, Patrick Ritter 22, was killed when he lost control on a curve on old M-61 west of Harrison. Three Harrison youths 17, 17 and 16 were injured, and a fifth passenger, 18, from Pontiac was uninjured. Clare County noted its first traffic fatality for 1971. Detour on M-61 north and west from Harrison to Marion eased but reconstructed sections remain closed to through traffic. Five injured in a two car head on collision on M-115 near Harding Road in Clare County included Iva Knox 74, William Knox 71, Scarlett Foots 18, Eric Foote HW, and Les Foote 63. Knox cited for driving left of center.
