Terraces Boost Drainage Control On Midwestern Farmlands
Agricultural engineer A T Holman from the federal soil erosion farm in Bethany Missouri says properly terraced fields reduce drainage problems in rolling lands. Terraces reclaim 10 to 20 percent of low wet areas while cutting erosion on high grounds. They guide water away from gullies, prevent seepy swamps, and distribute runoff through broad channels with V or U bottom shapes.
