Welfare spending in Clare County tops two million dollars

State and federal support cover most aid costs but direct relief drives county outlays. In 1970 direct relief cost nearly $100,000 with about 135 families on this aid, while overall social services expenditures exceeded $2.1 million.

Harrison seeks 2.9 million bond for new high school

Harrison School District voters will decide March 8 on a 2.9 million bond to fund a new high school and facilities to ease crowding. Superintendent Robert Larson noted the University of Michigan Bureau of School Services removed Harrison High from its accredited list effective July 1 1971, signaling sub standard conditions.

Youth Work Program in Clare County Seeks Space

Federally funded SixCap program aims to aid low income youth in Clare and Gladwin Counties. Space is the only major hurdle to full operations, with current sites in Harrison VFW Hall and a Farwell garage. Donated space of about 1500 square feet is needed free of rent, while funds cover insurance and minor remodeling.

New 18 to 20 Voters Rise in Clare County After Court Ruling

Clare County expects about 1020 residents to join the voting pool as literacy tests end and residency rules drop to 30 days. Nationally some 11.5 million youths gain enfranchisement, with experts predicting limited impact on election results. A Youth Development Program funded by a $14,660 Office of Economic Opportunity grant involves Sixcap officials and local businessmen to train and engage youths.

County officers honored for eight week training program

Twenty Clare County law officers from the Clare Auxiliary Police Force Sheriff s Posse and Police Department received certificates at a dinner in Clare Monday night for completing an eight week training. Sgt Dan Kostrzewa praised the officers for their professional conduct. Instructors included state police troopers a Clare assistant prosecutor a probate judge a juvenile officer and a district court judge among others.

Citizens Bank reelected officers and directors in Clare

Citizens Bank and Trust Company of Clare reelected its board of directors at the annual meeting. Frank LaGoe was named president with several officers elected including Miller as vice president and auditor John M Bicknell as vice president cashier and multiple assistant cashiers. The bank will observe February holidays with special Saturday hours from 9 am to noon on February 13.
