Clare fire losses hit 389000 in 1970 report shows

Clare Fire Chief James Brinkerhoff cited 389000 in district losses for 1970 with Dunlop Cafe damages exceeding 180000 after 17 hours of fighting. The district includes Clare Wise Sheridan Vernon and Grant Townships with 73 alarms and a 25 man volunteer force improving training and response times.

Clare Firefighters Aid Dunlop Fire Amid Alarms and Drills

Clare Volunteer Fire Department assisted other departments during the Dunlop fire after requests from three communities. Four false alarms occurred and two bomb threats were logged at Clare schools. Fire drills were held in district schools and a day care inspected. Brinkerhoff noted training with Clare Osteopathic Hospital and Clare Nursing Home. City Commissioners appointed Allacco Wendell Dralette and Richard Ulrich to the City Board of Review, to meet March 2 and 9 at city hall to review property assessment requests.

Sentinel printing mailing dates shift to Thursdays

Beginning February 17 readers in Clare will receive The Sentinel by mail on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays. Newsstand copies will be available by 11 am on Wednesdays in Clare Farwell Harrison Coleman Lake Loomis and Rosebush. Editor Phil Schneider says the change boosts coverage of local government school sports and news and allows more colored advertising and revised deadlines for classifieds and display ads.

Clare snowmobile races draw 2500 spectators in Clare

Weekend event at the former Watervliet Paper Mill property on Maple Road drew more than 2500 fans in sub freezing weather to watch 27 snowmobile racers compete for cash prizes trophies and judging points for future events. The Clare Chamber of Commerce and Twin Elms Golf Course co sponsor this weekend's races. Over 2168 dollars in prizes were awarded to 42 winners in four races including three powderpuff events for women.

District court revenue up in Clare County 1970 report

Clare County District Court reports a total general fund income of 41026 for 1970 up from 29717 in 1969. Fines and fees sent 6711 to the Clare Library Fund in Q4 and 22065 for the year, state fees totaled 9980, and local ordinance fines to municipalities totaled 4504.

Humane society seeks members for Clare County drive

Clare County residents will form a non profit humane society aiming to locate an animal shelter on about 10 acres. Funds raised to date total around 1000 dollars but 10000 dollars are needed to start operations. Board includes Vivian Ruell Ruth Salhoff Carol Oberlander Geraldine DeWalt Louis Hoover and Paul Nass. County board meets February 16 and Earl Householder of Harrison is appointed civil defense director.

Holbrook seeks traffic code revamp and safety focus

Michigan State Representative Donald E. Holbrook Jr. joined the House Public Safety Committee amid his fourth term and aims to overhaul the traffic code. He previously pushed tougher drunk driving laws and now leads efforts on a new state criminal code while also joining the Elections Committee to address congressional apportionment.

Clare-Farwell bank merger denied by federal board

The Federal Reserve Board denied the consolidation of Citizens Bank and Trust Company of Clare and Farwell State Savings Bank of Farwell. The same board approved the merger of Chemical Bank and Trust Company with Commercial Savings Bank of St. Louis. Citizens directors were elected at the annual meeting. Frank LaGoe became president with others named to vice presidencies and trust roles.
