Port Sheldon Boom Fades After 1838 Prospects
A letter in the Michigan Historical Collections recounts Port Sheldon’s brief boom in 1838, with plans for a harbor, hotel, railroad, and ships from Philadelphia investors. Laborers earned up to 26 dollars a month as speculation fizzled two years later, the hotel was razed, and pillars shipped to Grand Rapids. Luc ia Brown of St. Paul sent the letter to Mrs. James K. Pollock in 1940.

Women Do Domestic Chores Better Says Michigan Study
A Michigan State University psychology professor reports that women outperform men on monotonous tasks like dishwashing, though men are not entirely unfitted for chores. The study, funded by the U S Air Force, involved 10 women and 6 men aged 16 to 35 who watched lights for 4 hours 6 minutes, noting brightness changes. Initial 16 percent changes faded to require about 45 percent to notice, indicating vigilance declines over long, repetitive work. Veteran husbands may more easily fall into a state between valence ness and sleep during lengthy tasks.
