County road officials to attend National meeting in Cleveland

Clare County Road Commission appoints John Asline to represent the county at the American Road Builders Association annual meeting in Cleveland Ohio January 9 18 This marks the first time county road officials join a national body to promote standards in construction maintenance and finance. Local Basketball Teams Tangle as Alumni Triumph 19–14

The Alumni basketball team defeated Clare high school 19 to 14 last Thursday evening. Corrin Aldread started the second unit as the regulars were out early, giving the alumni a two point edge at the end of the first half. The Clare squad showed teamwork and effort but missed several easy chances and the alumni relied on long shots to extend their lead through the final three quarters. The Clare boys travel to Beaverton tonight hoping for a stronger showing after their week of training. Bridy, January 13, they play Eivart Clare.

The Michigan state highway department announces a winter snow removal program covering 6 645 trunk line miles an increase of 940 miles from last year. A new map outlines complete plans across upper and lower peninsulas with work aided by 600 000 feet of snow fence and high speed truck plows to cut costs and improve service.

State Laws on Arson and Rubbish Disposal Published

Deputy State Fire Marshal M A McKenna asked The Sentinel to publish sections of Michigan law on arson and rubbish disposal. Arson carries up to twenty years in prison for burning dwellings or structures. Laws prohibit placing rubbish or embers within ten feet of wooden or combustible material unless in noncombustible vessels or designated fire department areas.

Nichols Bolen Wedding Unites At Vernon Home

A guest wedding was held Saturday evening December 31 at the Archie Fordyce home in Vernon. Atmece Nichols and David Bolen were united in marriage by Rev. Burton Loomis. They were attended by Margery Nichols and Olivier Anderson of Flint. The couple will reside in Flint and many friends wish them happiness.

Infant dies of exposure during car trip in Ohio

The eleven month old son of Mr and Mrs John Hartman of Jerry City Ohio died Friday evening of pneumonia contracted in an automobile near James Hill while traveling companion Clark Fletcher and the father repaired a tire en route to Frederic Michigan. The parents lacking funds were aided by a subscription for immediate needs. Funeral services were held at Friz Undertaking rooms and burial followed in Cherry Grove cemetery.

Death Claims Aged Resident In Clare Community

Clinton Schoonover died at 72 in Clare near the county line on Friday evening December 29. Born June 14 1855 in Bath New York he married Sylvia Schilling in Clare in 1878 and leaves a wife two sons Frank and Guy, a sister Arthur Schoonover, two grandchildren and many friends. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church the following Monday with burial in Cherry Grove cemetery. Attending from afar were Mrs. A Rhodes and daughter and others from Sag inaw Cadillac Detroit and Flint.

Car Wrecked and Abandoned North of City Saturday

A Chevrolet touring car with license plates issued to James B. Hicks of Ferndale Michigan was wrecked and abandoned three miles north of Clare Saturday morning. The driver apparently chose to hit a tree rather than risk landing in the deep ditch. Garage tools were aboard and Sheriff Woods took charge, moving the vehicle to Clute's garage for storage until the owner is located.

Two Men Plead Guilty to Arson in Clare County

In Clare County Circuit Court Harrison on Wednesday Glenn Blystone and Herbert Himes pleaded guilty to setting fire to an unoccupied dwelling on west Seventh Street Clare. Fire damaged the two story structure owned by Blystone with a mortgage of about 1400 and $3000 insurance. Blystone admitted hiring Himes to start the blaze for 200. Both men were sentenced by Judge Ray Hart to Jackson state prison two to twenty years with a two year recommendation.

The Ladies Guild met in the Congregational church parlors on Wednesday afternoon. Reports showed over 700 dollars contributed to church finances and notable social program impact. A new three month executive plan elected a Board of Managers led by Mesdames Massett Thurston Wilson and Lewis to appoint committees and run duties of a President. Officers elected included Secretary Mrs White and Treasurer Mrs Rogers. A Bohemian supper followed at six thirty with husbands invited and a social hour.
