The Michigan State Police report for 1950 notes a postwar peak in traffic deaths totaling about 1,600 versus 1,441 the previous year. Rural areas accounted for most fatal crashes, while arrests rose to 1,698 and complaints to 1,346.
The school upgrades include a combined gas and oil burner heating system replacing coal, partial installations already in use during vacation, with floors poured and new sections accessible at each end. Glass arrived and will finish installation. once dry, plastering and painting follow. The east wing adds a shop with lathes, saws, drafting room for 20, plus an Agricultural room near the shop to display machinery. A new band room, a west kitchen for year round student lunches, fold-away furniture, a new library, and multiple classrooms accompany these improvements.

Owen Cox a 19 year old from Traverse City crash his 1949 Plymouth into the rear of a Chesapeake and Ohio freight engine at the McEwan Street grade crossing. The collision occurred at 10 35 oclock Tuesday morning with the train at about 15 mph Cox escaped unhurt but his car was badly damaged with $200 estimated damage. Dick Forsberg 21 of Coleman was badly injured after losing control of his car on an icy intersection near the village He was treated at Midland hospital and later at Saginaw General Hospital for a broken jaw and multiple teeth loss The Forsberg family is noted with his mother Mrs H H Forsberg and grandfather Mr and Mrs Louis Thayer of Clare

Clare High School vocational agriculture students completed supervised farm projects in 1950 with 22 665 dollars in business and a net profit of 9 077 18 dollars. Output included 18 000 pounds beef 118 000 pounds milk and 12 000 pounds pork along with other products. Notable participants were Bob Karman Alger Smock Lyle Bates Neil Ackerman Norman Smith Lyle Armentrout and Bernard Blackledge.

Eugene Jourdain of Clare pleaded guilty to reckless driving after rejecting drunk driving charges and paying a $75 fine plus $5.40 costs in Mt. Pleasant Municipal Court. Prosecutor Byron P. Gallagher said further investigation led to revised charges and withdrawal of the original counts.
The Senior Class of 1951 will depart May 14 from Clare to Holland Michigan then sail to Chicago overnight arriving Tuesday morning. They will spend the day in Chicago and sail back to Holland at midnight returning to Clare by bus. Advisors are Mrs Bowler Mr Harper and Mr Richardson.
The Doherty Hotel advances an expansion to double the coffee shop area and add 120 seats. A new Early American Room with an Armstrong acoustic ceiling will serve as the main dining room for banquets, with capacity for up to 500 guests when paired with Wedgewood Fifth Avenue and Emerald Rooms.
Fishermen report seeing old lunkers in Shingle Lake. Gene Purvis of Lake George claimed substantiating evidence at about 8:00 a m Wednesday morning. He speared a 36 inch Great Northern pike weighing 12 1 2 pounds and 18 inches in girth using a 12 inch live sucker as a decoy from 12 feet over a weedbed with a seven tine Neeley spear. A mate reportedly landed a similar fish that escaped.
The Clare Pioneers lost 52 to 26 at home to a St. Louis team on Wednesday January 3. Fred Corbiss led St. Louis with 19 points as Clare trailed 33-11 at halftime and struggled for rebounds. The Junior Varsity fell 51-24 to St. Louis JV. Clare heads to Harrison Friday and to Shepherd next Tuesday for 7:30 p.m. games.
George W. Anderson, 75, longtime Clare businessman and former Pete Marquette ticket and freight agent, died Thursday evening after a lengthy illness. He lived in Lansing the past decade and belonged to Elks Lodge 196. Survived by two daughters and three grandchildren, funeral services were held at Palmer-Bush in Lansing, with Elks conduct, then burial at Riverside Cemetery Kalamazoo chapel officiated by Rev. H L Sutcliffe. Participants from the area included Donald and Mrs Jones, Verrette, and Seibt families.
The story follows Frank Keplinger of Farwell Michigan who began with a wild strawberry and built a national horticultural project. He developed Gem, then Superfection, and most recently Brilliant which premiered around 1951. Anna Mae Cox, Clare High School class of 1950 graduate, has been awarded a Michigan State scholarship. The award goes to a Clare High School graduate each year and remains in effect while the recipient maintains a 2.6 average at Michigan State College.

Sylvester Eugene Harris born August 2 1880 in Clara County Michigan died December 29 1960 at his Mt. Pleasant area home after a long Clare County life. He married Maude Stevenson November 15 1899 and had eight children. later married Harriet Williams in 1945. Funeral held December 31 at Stephenson Funeral Home with burial in Surrey Township Cemetery.
Alfred C Matteson 84 retired Rosebush merchant and father of Roy Matteson cashier at Rosebush State Bank died at his Rosebush home Thursday evening after five days illness. Born March 20 1867 in Aurelius Michigan he moved to Rosebush after marrying Maria Johnston December 25 1897. He ran a general store from 1897 to 1937 and is survived by his wife, Mariah, son Roy, and many relatives and friends. Funeral at Rosebush Presbyterian Church Sunday at 2:00 p m with Rev R O Thomson and burial in Riverside Cemetery Mt Pleasant.
