Four County Agr Teachers Meet in Clare

A. C. Baltzer of Michigan State College spoke to agriculture teachers from four counties in Clare last Tuesday about increasing next year's milk production to 116 billion pounds without expanding dairy herds. He urged better care, feeding, and housing and the use of home grown replacement heifers to balance farm businesses in war and peace times.

Local leaders plan a county wide body to coordinate wartime health and nutrition efforts. The Child Health Association would serve as the core, with township reps and subcommittees. Christmas Morning Fire Extinguished at Clare Farm

Clare firemen battled a blaze at the Dewey Wood residence two miles east of Clare on old US-10 Christmas morning around 3:00. Hot walls and smoke delayed entry until firefighters found a shingles pile burning in the basement. Fire may have started from sparks through an abandoned chimney above the stove. Loss covered by insurance. fire damaged walls and smoke throughout the home. Other fires in Grant township and Windover Lake area followed in recent days, with injuries reported in at least one incident. Continued coverage on page twelve.

Christmas lantern fire claims young Harrison bride

Ivy Cole, eighteen, wife of Merle Davis, died from burns sustained when a gasoline lantern exploded while lighting a room for Christmas at her parents north of Harrison. Four others, including Lavon Cole, Alvie Cole Jr, and Mrs. Alvie Cole, suffered burns. Lavon hospitalized in serious condition.

Former Hatton Township Resident Dies in Alma

David Seymour a longtime Hatton township resident died at his Alma home on Friday December 26 at age 69 He was born in Stanton Montcalm county and is survived by his elderly wife Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Batrian on Monday November 29.

Clare Post Office shattered records during the Christmas season with seven day cancelations peaking in totals from 1935 to 1941. Daily tallies for December 17 to 24 show 53 278 parcels and letters, plus bulky envelopes and parcel post handled beyond the machine.
