Over 200 students teachers and government officials attended the eighth Clare County Government Day at Clare High School on Monday February 11 sponsored by the Michigan Institute of Local Government. Local leaders and university instructors led sessions on education conservation taxation and welfare with rounds of Q A and group discussions concluding with a call for youth political participation.

Harold Brooks Named Outstanding Farmer of Isabella County
Harold R. Brooks of near Clare wins Isabella County Outstanding Young Farmer honor at Mt. Pleasant Jaycees dinner on February 18 and will compete in the state finals February 23. Brooks, 33, farms 280 acres, milks 25 cows, and operates with a modern dairy setup. He is a MSU graduate and has 14 years in farm account work totaling 652 productive days. He is the third generation on the home farm, now expanded from 160 to 280 acres, and active in Clare churches, schools, Grange, Farm Bureau, Michigan Milk Producers, and more. He serves as a director of Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance in Isabella County, the third generation in that role. Local Farm Bureau nominations aided the contest with judges from several counties and MSU extension.
