Congregational Church Observes Lenten Season

The Congregational and Christian churches join in Lent observances urged by the Commission on Missions and Devotional Life. A daily Fellowship of Prayer booklet is distributed for family worship, with sermons on Studies in the Life of Jesus from February 14 to March 28, including themes Historic Jesus and Crucifixion and Resurrection. The Lent period runs Feb 10 to Easter March 28 with choir and pastor coordinating services.

Cathryn Dittmar Speaks at Flave Study Club Meeting

About twenty five members met at Mrs. Victoria Mercer’s home on Tuesday February 9. Miss Cathryn Dittmar, an area high school teacher, spoke about a summer term in Cambridge and a planned trip to Scandinavia. She showed a colorful dolls collection and tea followed the talk. The group will meet February 23 with Mrs. Josephine Jackson to discuss Youth Movement Abroad and in America.

Legion Auxiliary Pledges Garments for Billet

The Legion Auxiliary met Friday in the Legion room with seven members present. They pledged to provide ten pair of pants and a spread for billets and urged continued attendance at sewing sessions. Dinner was served at 35 cents per plate at the M&E church parlors.

Boy Scout Leaders Training Course at Clare High School

A Boy Scout Leaders training course titled An Introduction to Scouting will start February 17 at Clare High School with Wednesday evenings and a weekend at Camp Rotary. Harold Fleming and Chet Richard invite current leaders and interested individuals to participate and earn a National Council certificate after completing the program.

Barnum McLellan Dies Suddenly in Saginaw

The Clare reports Barnum McLellan died suddenly Sunday near his Clare home. His brother found him in his car from a heart attack. Barney delivered Saturday Evening Post and Gurus magazines to Clare drug stores and boy salesmen for four years. He was kind and well liked.

Surrey Township Agricultural School Closed This Week

The Farwell school in Surrey Township is closed due to unsafe highway conditions and ice hazards on routes in Grant and Surrey Townships. Four buses service the rural routes delivering students, but dangers at curves and road beds prompted the temporary halt with plans to reopen Monday if road issues are resolved.

Postponed Sessions of Clare County Circuit Court

Clare County Circuit Court opened for a three day session led by Judge Hart to hear eight matters from the January term postponed due to illness. Five criminal cases against Darnell four named defendants and Lloyd were all pled and ordered for sentence after waivers and one Nolle Prosequi for Marie Van Order. The docket also included a Hart Herron false order case pending further pages.

Three Car Collision at McEwan and Fourth Early Sunday

At about 1 30 a m Sunday a Ford coupe owned by Russell Lawler of Rosebush and driven by R Wheeler collided with a Ford sedan driven by Matthew McConnell of Vernon. McConnell slowed for a car at 4th and McEwan then was struck from behind, spinning twice and pushing into a parked car. Minor injuries went to Ida Hochstetler and Sylvia Smith of Clare. Lawler had a chest bruise. All cars headed south and were towed to Hampton's Garage for repairs.
