Winter Carnival draws crowds despite heavy snows

A weekend storm blanketed the area with deep snow as Winter Carnival events drew overflow crowds for the banquet and Queen's Ball. Andrea Clute was chosen Miss Clare County and will compete in Grayling for Miss Northern Michigan, with preparations for Miss Michigan. Snow disrupted some activities, but ski and ice races proceeded while others were cancelled, and one vehicle accident injured Mrs Brackart.

Vets Return From Michigan Postgraduate Conference

Dr. N B Stirling of Clare and Dr. Frank Bolenbaugh of Coleman returned from the 44th annual Postgraduate Conference for Veterinarians at Michigan State University held January 24 25. More than 400 veterinarians and students from Michigan and other states heard specialists discuss advances in farm animal treatment.

Five Clare and Gladwin Graduates Among CMU Class

Five graduates from Clare and three from Gladwin County are in CMU’s record-breaking winter term class receiving degrees. Clare natives Phyllis Hartshorn Helen Maxwell Jarl Ruark Larry Stanley and Ethel Whitford earned four-year degrees. Beaverton resident David Romatz plus Esther Berkan and Francis Mantei of Gladwin earned BS degrees. United States Senator Robert Griffin spoke at commencement.

Dairy Club Formed in Clare County

Clare county youths formed the Junior Dairy Club at an organizational meeting held last Thursday at the Bill Walters home. Elected officers included Tim Kleinhardt as president George Shetler vice president Charman Kleinhardt secretary Byron Schunk treasurer and Floyd Koerner of Harrison as organizational leader. Any 4 H age youth interested in dairying is invited to join.

Record Snowstorm Paralyzes Midwest With Delayed Travel

Old Man Winter dumped a record snowfall across Michigan and several states last week. Clare escaped much of the blow while nearby roads, plowed late Friday and Saturday, caused long delays for travellers. Post offices reported intact service though rural routes faced slowdowns and stores closed early.

Farwell Edges Pioneers 66 63 in Upset

The Farwell Eagles defeated the Clare Pioneers 66 to 63 in a surprising road upset. Clare, 3-0 in conference play before, slips to 4-2 in the U.S. 10 race while Farwell improves to 5-3 overall with a 4-2 conference mark. The Pioneers had beaten Farwell earlier 65-57 in December. The Clare squad travels to Meridian Friday to face the Mustangs, who sit at 3-2 and may hold a 4-2 rating.

Grandmas in State History Pageant Plans at MSU

Mrs Kenneth Hilton of Harrison and Mrs Arthur Schindler of Gladwin lead a community effort for Michigan State University to gather stories about women and families in the region. They will help write a script for a pageant celebrating MSU's College for Women next July 2028.

New CHS Band Recording Goes On Sale

Glare Public School bands and chorus prepare a 12 inch monaural LP for students and boosters. Lloyd Conley plans advance sales through mid March with about three numbers per group. The disc features Symphonic, Reserve, Junior and Intermediate Bands and Clare Sr Chorus with Fight Song Alma Mater. Delivery expected late April or early May.

The 1967 Michigan Highway Map lists 1 627 cities villages and parks while 2 100 other spots are omitted due to space. The log shows 3 748 locations offering contrasts from Wolf Creek to Moscow in one county and Verona style nods to Shakespeare.

Clare county supervisors appoint a Planning Board to guide growth and resource use. The board focuses on land and water conservation, tourism, industry, and population distribution, with terms set for three, two, and five years. A meeting on Feb. 6 will organize the board.
