Plan for Clare suburb faces delays may appear on special ballot

City of Clare weighs a lake shore subdivision on 70 acres north and east of the former mill pond. The plan envisions 108+ residential lots around a restored Tobacco River dam with park space. Mayor Haley supports annexing eastern parcels and placing two ballot questions before voters. Rod and Gun Club backs a referendum and petitions to place the issue on a special election.

Michigan Adopts Absolute Speed Limit Law

Michigan's new state speed law takes effect February 3 adding absolute limits of 65 mph on daylight state and county roads and 55 mph at night. Enforcement follows headlights hours. trucks 45 mph buses 40 to 50 mph and cars with trailers 50 mph. The basic speed law remains in force requiring speeds not unsafe for conditions.

Rancher Glen to Entertain County Kids Next Week

Rancher Glen a guitar playing health educator from the Michigan Tuberculosis Association will visit Clark county schools February 6 in Clare February 7 in Harrison. He will perform 45 minute programs stressing cleanliness good food sleep outdoor play and correct posture while sharing western life and cowboy stories. Students may join the Rancher Glen Health Club and receive a membership card with his autograph.

Indian Study Film Showing to Complete Mission Work

A film titled Song of the Shining Mountain will be shown Thursday evening February 2 to conclude the Indian Americans study from Within Two Worlds. An all church potluck begins at 6 30 p.m. Families bring sandwiches and a dish to pass. Primary and Junior Departments meet after school this week and will find the film of interest.

Foreign Students Attend Clare County Carnival Weekend

About sixty foreign exchange students and American sponsors from across Michigan gathered in Clare County for a weekend of exchange. German high school seniors performed at a Methodist church program and joined in the Winter Sports Festival Ball at Hotel Doherty. Hosts Rev. and Mrs. Delamartér fed the group at God's Way Camp, with additional American students who had studied abroad. A forum and Q&A discussed social political and educational systems, followed by tours of the county’s festivities and church services. The visit was sponsored by the Clare County Ministerial Association. Franz Joachim Goehre, a Clare High senior from Germany, plans to return to German high school after graduation.

Champion Beef Showman Carolyn Carter Crowned

Carolyn Carter daughter of Robert Garters from Cornwell Ranch earned Champion Beef Showman at Michigan State University's Little International livestock show during Farmers Week in East Lansing. She showed an MSA owned animal she groomed and trained and is a sophomore.

Clare City Men’s Bowling Tournament Opens Soon

The Clare City Men's Bowling Tournament sponsored by the Men's Bowling Association opens Saturday February 11 and runs to February 19 at Gateway Lanes. Twenty two teams enter with 45 doubles pairs and 80 singles scheduled. Singles and doubles bowled Sunday February 190nly from 11 am to 11 pm. Prize money will be smaller than in the past.

CMC Man Announces Run for Legislature

Robert L. Sawyer of Mount Pleasant declares he will seek the Democratic nomination for State Representative in the Clare Isabella district. Sawyer is an assistant professor of political science at Central Michigan College and was the Democratic candidate for the post in 1954.

Court Fines Driver And Takes License

John W. Shaw of Farwell was arrested by Clare police on January 28 and charged with driving while under the influence. He arraigned in Municipal Court and surrendered his license, paying 75 dollars in fines and costs. A separate crash on North US-27 injured Lois M. Nolan and damaged her car 125 dollars while a second collision on West Fourth Street caused 125 dollars in damage to Edgar D. Price’s vehicle and unknown to William D. Bailey’s car.

Boy Scouts Week Highlighted Across Clare County

The Boy Scouts launch the Four Year Program Onward for God and My Country during Boy Scout Week February 6 to 12 marking the 46th anniversary. In Clare three potluck suppers are planned with sites at City Hall Harrison and Farwell on February 6 7 and 9 respectively. Chief Scout Executive Dr Arthur A Schuck says the program strengthens youth through prepared citizenship and service with new scoutmasters Robert Gravelle and Wayne Patterson joining the Clare unit public school faculty.

Bids OK'd To Build New County Jail

The Clare County Board of Supervisors approved revised bids to build the Clare County Jail after jail committee revisions reduced cost estimates. Construction bids by Clyde Genter Construction Company Ludington for building work Ackerman Plumbing and Heating Clare for plumbing and heating and Harrison Appliance for electrical wiring were accepted pending state approval. The jail size remained the same but replacements such as iron pipes and manual garage doors were made. Jail committee chairman Albert Haley said other members include Louis Gee Ray Richardson and Thomas Hecker replacing Dan Holcomb who resigned.

Clare County United Fund Drive raised $8,139.35 toward a $9,559 goal, about 86 percent. Neeper Rides Long Mail Route to 75 Miles

Lake Michigan postmaster Wilbur S. McLane notes a 75 mile rural mail route run by Roy L. Neeper, possibly the second longest in the United States. The route was extended at the end to include patrons, with comparisons to Clare county routes and average rural mail mileage.

Anderson's Bowling Fifth In State Tournament

Anderson Drugstore's Bowling team competes in the Michigan Women's State Bowling tournament in Port Huron, January 28 and 29, currently fifth. Karol Amble Chosen Clare County Queen At Winter Sports Festival

Karolyn Amble, a Harrison native and Central Michigan College junior, was selected Miss Clare County at a Saturday Queen’s Ball held during the Clare County Winter Sports Festival. A large crowd braved sleet to attend the Hotel Doherty event as foreign exchange students joined the celebration.
