John Woodward Dies at Home in Clare After Long Career
John Woodward a longtime Clare resident and prominent automobile dealer died at his North Beech street home on Tuesday afternoon after years of heart illness. Born April 18 1868 in Norfolk County Canada he migrated to Clare in 1896 with his family and later built a local business spanning lumber milling moving and auto sales. He leaves a wife Carrie Ann Franklin and children Laurie Winnie Mabel and Lida Evelyn who died young. Continued on Page Twelve.

Perfect Yankee Operation By Smedley In Germany
Pfc William H Smedley 23 formerly of Flint now with the Seventh Army in Germany took part in a swift operation described as perfect by a war correspondent. He and 29 soldiers silently entered a German held town and neutralized troops in 17 minutes without a casualty. His parents Mr and Mrs Walter Smedley of Farwell learned of him after six weeks. He had worked for A C Spark Plug Co in Flint before enlisting in 1942.
