Forest fires toll in Clare county 1948 report

Clara county conservation officers report 81 forest fires in 1948 burning 259.50 acres with damage $785.60 and suppression costs $1 210.64. Fines for conservation law violations totaled 1 878.76 and court costs 548.75. A list of individuals pled guilty in justice court during deer season includes many from Clare Birch Run Battle Creek Detroit and other towns. Continued on Page Eight.

Merchants and Employees Plan Business Talks

A series of round table discussions for Clare merchants and their employees will start next Tuesday evening January 4 at 7 30 pm in Clare High School. Howard H Sommer of Central Michigan College will direct topics on selling techniques customer relations and store operation with six weekly meetings.

Soil Conservation District Meeting Set in Harrison

The Clare County Soil Conservation District holds its first annual meeting on January 20 at 1 30 p m in the Harrison Court House. Two directors will be elected and a discussion program on conservation practices is planned. A Goodyear film My Country will be featured and discussed. State Police Commissioner Donald Leonard warns motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution during the New Year weekend after a Christmas toll of 25 deaths eight of them pedestrians. He notes the holiday period remains deadly and urges safer driving and walking while city police plan to jail intoxicated or careless drivers.

4-H Club Seeks Camp Site With Strong Support

After eight months of effort a favorable camp site offer has been made. A Parents-Leaders Association committee including Harl Simmons Louis Becker and Floren Pudway plans to push the project. A January 14 meeting at the Court House in Harrison invites parents and friends to back the 4-H camp initiative.

The Junior Police will start their winter program sponsored by the Clare Kiwanis Club and Clare Rotary Club at Clare High School at 1 30 Saturday afternoon January 8. All members are requested to be present and bring their tennis shoes.

Floyd Norcutt Parents Die In Auto Crash

Mr and Mrs Floyd Norcutt and their son were called to Greenville where Henry and Alice Norcutt died after their car skidded into a truck. Henry 64 and Alice 62 were Clarksville residents returning from Stanton. Funeral services set for Friday afternoon. Sandra Schultz 15 injured when struck crossing McEwan Street by a car driven by William Humphrey 16 of Clare R1. She and sister Lorraine taken to Central Michigan Community Hospital Mt Pleasant.

Ark Byba laid to rest at Cherry Grove

Funeral services were held at Thurston Chapel for Ark Byba of Grant township who died December 21 at his home west of Clare. Rev. Chas B. Hahn officiated and interment followed in Cherry Grove cemetery. Born April 28 1871 in Ohio, he married Rhoda Rutherford October 9 1898. He is survived by his wife one adopted daughter Mrs Marguerite DeArmond of Detroit two grandchildren and many relatives.

Professor F Robinson Tackles Communism at Rotary Luncheon

Prof Francis Robinson of Mt Pleasant addressed Rotarians at the noon luncheon in a December series talk. He warned of communist spread in South America and criticized U S foreign policy including dollar diplomacy and prewar promises. He urged stronger democracy ideals and better tactics to counter communism locally without overreliance on force and the atom bomb.

Community AAA Committeemen Elected in Clare County

A total of 169 votes were cast by Clare county farmers in the annual mail election for community AAA committeemen. One delegate and one alternate from each township were elected to attend the county AAA convention at Harrison on December 31 to choose a county committee for 1949.

Sarah Ann Robison of Sheridan township Clare county Michigan died December 20 at home aged 82. Born February 27 1866 in Novi Michigan she was married to Oscar D Robison June 7 1885. Deaths Eugene Stanley Passes at 91 in Harrigan

Eugene Stanley died Tuesday night December 28 at his son James Stanley's home in Harrigan at age ninety one. Funeral services are set for Friday afternoon at 2:00 o clock in Harrison with interment at Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare. The obituary note will be continued next week.

Gene Krupa Band Lights Gateway Lanes Christmas Eve

An enthusiastic crowd at Gateway Lanes enjoyed the Gene Krupa Band's performance on Christmas Eve. About five hundred children and youths from Clare and nearby areas attended the skating party sponsored by Citizens State Bank. Plans for future bookings and a New Year masquerade skate for ages 14 to 21 from 10 PM to 1 AM are noted.

Pleads Guilty in Series of Local Reckless Driving Cases

Norman Wight of Bellevue pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was fined after arrest on November 28. Others, including George A. Stevens Alpena and Kenneth Roan Clare, also pled guilty to drunken disorderly conduct and assault charges, with fines and probation. Wenzel J. Miller St Louis and Gaylord Coffell Mt. Pleasant faced similar charges, with fines and restitution. Police report increasing car theft and theft from cars with warnings of strict penalties.

Clare Table Top Christmas Party Pleases Children

One hundred fifty children attended the Clare County Unit of Michigan Table Top Licensees Congress Christmas party in Clare city hall. Linda Ann Stevens lit the tree as Santa distributed stockings with candy and storybooks while ice cream was served. William Haley a longtime livestock buyer in Clare Rosebush Mount Morris and Flint died after a brief illness in Hurley Hospital Flint. Funeral services were held at St Cecilia Church with interment at St Cecilia Cemetery. Doherty Sons handled arrangements.
