The Sentinel recalls its November 20 1870 picture of the first train to Clare on the Flint and Pere Marquette Railway. The image has circulated in several papers including Grand Rapids Press Flint Journal Saginaw News and Kalamazoo Gazette. Surviving relatives of World War I veterans who died within three years after discharge may qualify for monthly benefits under a new Social Security Act amendment. Eligible are children under 18, widows with children, widows over 65, and aged dependent parents with conditions met. Lump sums available if no monthly income. Applications filed before February 10, 1947, start benefits from death. later filings must occur within three months of death. Continued on Page Eight.
Glenn Dobbs 28 of Fenton escaped a fatal crash Sunday after his Taylor Craft plane, misled by Rosebush lights, landed in an open field southeast of Rosebush following a cross country flight to Mt. Pleasant. He walked to the Hunter residence to call his wife. minor injuries noted, plane damaged beyond repair. Local authorities and airport officials coordinated the salvage Monday.
Vincent Eisenhauer longtime Farwell resident and local fraternal and political figure died Monday in a Mt. Pleasant hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM from Farwell Methodist Church with Rev. Chas B Hahn officiating. Interment in Surrey Township Cemetery. Russell Thurston in charge of arrangements.
The Office of Temporary Controls in Washington announced on Monday that sugar stamp No 53 in ration book four will be valid for five pounds from January 1 to April 30. An additional stamp is expected to be issued before No 58 expires. Secretary Clinton P. Anderson said more sugar is anticipated in 1947 but the exact amount depends on harvest output.
Charles Keplinger of Farwell died at Central Michigan Community Hospital Mt Pleasant after months of ill health and a stroke at his son Frank's home on December 15 He was born March 30 1871 near Schenectady New York and lived in Saginaw and Clare counties He married Marie Steible in 1893 and had five children Clara preceded him in death in 1924 Funeral services were held at Thurston Funeral Home Clare with Rev Chas Kleinhardt and burial at Cherry Grove Cemetery beside his wife.
The Clare Manufacturing Company employees held their first Christmas party in the plant cafeteria at noon Tuesday. Art Damoth prepared dinner aided by cigars and candy, and Manager R H Kleinhardt thanked him then presented each staffer with a bonus check.
Clare county farmers cast 216 ballots in the annual mail election for AAA community committeemen. The tally on December 17 shows 33 percent participation. Listings include township chairmen, delegates, regular members and alternates for Winterfield, Greenwood, Hayes, Franklin, Arthur, Sheridan, and Grant townships with named individuals and alternates.
In 1947 Michigan Conservation Camp expands after two trial years at Higgins Lake to host 600 youths ages 14 to 17 in Allegan state forest camp area. Sponsored by Michigan United Conservation Clubs with clubs funding youths, the plan adds a new one week girls camp alongside five boys camps. The department provides instructors in game and fisheries, woodcraft, and rifle marksmanship at a site seven miles from Allegan near Swan Creek Wildlife station and 40,000 acre state forest.
Six Lakes Orchestra hosts a New Year’s Eve dance at Beal City Hall on December 31 from 10:00 p.m. to 12:28 a.m. Everyone is welcome with admission listed.
