Mrs J B Brown Dies After Long Illness In Clare
Mrs J B Brown widow of a Clare businessman died at 2 20 PM Saturday at the Mater home on East Wheaton Avenue after recent illness. She was born Pauline Franklin October 21 1861 in Clearcreek Ontario and married J B Brown June 1 1881. Survivors include two sons Franklin and Lloyd, six grandchildren, one brother John T Franklin and many relatives. Funeral services were held at Doherty Funeral Home with Rev Albert Dawe. Interment in Cherry Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Frank Poet, aged 80 years 11 months 20 days, died December 18 at her daughter Mrs Ray Bergey’s home after two years of bed confinement. Born January 7, 1862 in Wayne County, she married David Franklin Poet May 6, 1882 and settled in Sheridan Township. She leaves three children Clarence, Grace Seestedt, Florence Bergey, and Glenn, plus nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. two grandsons serving in the armed forces. Burial was at Cherry Grove cemetery after service at Eagle Church conducted by Rev M R Honderich and Wesley Teale.

Lake correspondent reports Pvt. Willard Gilman of the U S Marines returned from Mare Island on thirty day leave after five weeks in the Solomon Islands. He was wounded in the ankle and leg near Guadalcanal, walked with a cane, and recalls leading a landing of 240 Marines at Henderson airfield amid heavy Japanese resistance. He was knocked out by a 1000 pound bomb, survived a bayonet charge, and saved a machine gun nest during a river assault. He expects to rejoin his unit once healed.
