A 38 year old inmate from the State Hospital at Traverse City escaped Tuesday and was arrested Wednesday in Clare after a State Police patrol recognized his stolen car. The man was held by the Clare County sheriff at Harrison before hospital authorities recovered him.
Clare High School senior Lucille Becker is chosen by students and faculty as the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen for the national award. She is active in 4-H and dress shows with strong marks and art interest.
Clare Public School announced marking period averages with senior ninth and twelfth grade lists leading the all A honorees. Names include Lucile Becker Ruth Doe John Roe Beverly Thayer among seniors and Richard Beery Jean Bowler Sharon Gaspenny Roger Walter Robert Warner among eighth graders, with many others across grades.
The old-time general store in the area will close in a few weeks after Carmen Newman puts stock on sale. The store has stood for nearly fifty years, with Newman as owner for ten years. The Newmans plan to live on site after stock is sold. Former owners include Ira Bryan Edgar Brady the Miller brothers Oren and Loren Ira Lower Bill Martin Murt Hutchinson.
Clare hosts Durand in the season opener Friday night December 9 marking the first Mid Michigan B Conference game for both. Clare enters with Gerry Fullerton and Nard Robinette leading a line strengthened by Bernie Longstreth and Dexter Hubel. Durand relies on speed and veterans after a 50-48 non conference loss to Perry.
Clare City Chairman Frank La Goe reported $8850 in cash and pledges toward the Clare United Fund, aiming to surpass the county goal of $8059. He predicted the drive would reach the goal this year for the first time and hoped to finish this week, with strong business support boosting plans for next year.

Salaries start at 3042 per year or 151 per hour for related roles, with raises and benefits details provided by a Post Office official. Applications accepted until further notice at the Seventh U S Civil Service Region office in Chicago.
Mrs. Doris Mitchell was elected Noble Grand of the Clara Rebekah Lodge to serve in 1956 at the December 6 meeting. Officers include Ina Hammond as vice grand and Yvonne Leonard as recording secretary. A Christmas pot luck dinner and program are planned for December 11 with Santa Claus expected.
Two Clare teams competed in the Detroit Bowling Tournament on a Sunday. Awards went to Pat Barbes Neila Wisler and Lee Jackson across divisions. Attendees included Clarice Bellong Francis Kembplier Mildred LeTourneau Jane Calkins Myrtle Coil and Catherine Vlock. They dined in the suburbs after a stormy drive home.
Clare stores will stay open until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights starting December 9 and on selected Thursday afternoons December 15 and 22. From December 19 they will greet shoppers until 9 p.m. every day until Christmas Eve when doors close at 6 p.m.
A group of about thirty beef feeders and dairy farmers left Mt. Pleasant on December 1 for a two day tour of Chicago. Led by Robert F L Acker the party visited the International Livestock Show and the Purina Research Farm at Gray Summit Missouri. The trip included stops at the Swift Packing Co Chicago Board of Trade and the Federal Reserve Bank.
The First Baptist Church of Clare invites the public to musical offerings this Sunday December 11 featuring organist John Bos and guitarists Paul and Ralph from Holland and Grand Rapids. Bos impressed listeners last month and will perform at 11:00 AM and 7:46 PM during morning and evening services.
The annual Harvest Supper sponsored by the Methodist Men will be held at the Methodist church in Clare Thursday night December 8. Serving as the turkey supper with all the trimmings will begin at 5 0 p.m. Tickets are selling well and may be bought ahead of time or at the door, according to Ralph Cole the ticket and publicity chairman.

The Central Michigan College tumblers from Mt Pleasant under Coach Doc O Sweeney perform at Clare High School today December 8 in their first of 17 shows this season. The Clare Rotary Club funds the tour to aid underprivileged children. The team features 13 returnees from last year including six women and student Kent Kuhn of Harrison.
Clare Study Club members and guests enjoyed a Christmas concert by the Clare Public School choir directed by Mrs. Nancy Jabara on December 6. The program featured selections from Shaw Fisher Romberg and traditional carols, plus solos and a quartet. Officers for 1956 57 were proposed by Mrs. Wallace Johnson and a tea with poinsettias followed.
Clare Public School will announce no school days when weather and bad roads prevent operation. The policy, stated by Superintendent Thomas Campbell, mirrors last year. Announcements will be broadcast over WCEN in Mt. Pleasant by 7 A.M. to inform listeners.
The Buck contest drew 1 000 entrants from Michigan Maryland Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and Illinois. Ed Richardson Sr of Clare dented the biggest buck a 191 pounder winning an insulated plaid hunting suit. Winston Raymond of Clate took a buck with an 18 5 inch horn spread and won a Marlin six caliber fever action rifle.
Clare firefighters partner with local merchants to host a Santa Claus party Saturday afternoon for district children. Santa will give candy and numbered tickets, prize drawings require matching numbers at participating Clare stores, with prizes displayed in shop windows. Crews packed candy sacks with goodies and tickets on Wednesday.
