A letter from Monrovia California dated November 27 1928 describes the Clareites settling in a furnished rental for a month at 706 Valley View Ave Monrovia. They recount travel fatigue and visit with Mr Roota George Browns wife’s folks who own an orange grove valued at about 18000 dollars.
Mrs. Edmond Woods wife of the Clare county sheriff aided by a friend identified two escapees Don Hindman and Mr Petty from the Traverse City asylum. She directed the car to the jail where they were locked up as hospital authorities arrived later.

Memorial note from Robert J. J. Wilson and children in memory of wife and mother Minnie Wik gon. The message laments her passing on December 5 1927 and honors her as a beloved spouse and parent. The verse speaks of a vacant home and a soul now in heaven.
Joseph Yeoman aged ninety one lives on West Sixth Street. He walks to George Wilson's farm three miles away each day to cut poles for wood and return home. He recalls trading poles for plowing work with Wilson who is nearly seventy and recently recovered from an operation. Yeoman credits activity, has gardens nearby, and notes the couple previously lived on a farm south of Clare before moving to a cottage.
Circuit court at Harrison last December term presided by Judge Ray Hart heard few cases. Budd and Gleason pleaded guilty to larceny and received multi year sentences for stealing two steers and selling them in Detroit. Keith placed on two year probation with $100 due. Smith bound for child support of one year old. Bailey's township settlement ended his suit over injuries from a 1922 ice storm.
Lucille Elmore niece of Fred Stone and former Broadway star of Stepping Stones leads a revue of stunts monologues and songs. The act features Miss Simore impersonations ventriloquism and mimics with Jenn Harper singing and Betty Postlethwaite at the piano. The second Interstate Lyceum Course performance by Clare City Sophomores comes next Wednesday at 8 o clock.
John Nass of Grant township charged with arson for burning Otto Garden residence four miles north of town on October 6 1928 was discharged and the case nolle prosequi in Clara County Circuit Court Harrison. Doctors said Nass aged twenty four with the mental capacity of an eight year old was mentally incompetent. Prosecution moved to drop case due to lack of admissible evidence. Judge Ray Hart granted the motion and Nass was released.
Authorities warn trespassers or those cutting trees on the Clara Aire Ranch will face legal action as enforced by law. Glave. Aire Ranch.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce schedules a December gathering on Wednesday at 6:30 PM with Dr. Louis Webber of Fremont as speaker. Webber is state president of the Association of Chamber of Commerce secretaries and a noted lecturer. Rev. W W Hurd helped secure him for the event.
The Methodist church hosts a pageant titled The Never Ending Adventure led by Miss Denils Gerow. Cast includes Prophetess Misa Doris Gerow and Mysterious Voice Louisa Roger with six Inquirers and music by the church choir under Mrs Me Guixve at the organ.
A Thanksgiving wedding at the home of J. O. Haines in Coleman united Iyone Haines and Arleigh H. Gorr at high noon. Rev. F. W. Kirn officiated under a living room arch as Lohengrin played. Guests included Ethel Haines and Dorothy Gorr, with a Mayflower centerpiece and Pilgrim doll favors. The couple plans to reside in Clare.
The Clare County Chapter Red Cross held its annual meeting at the high school auditorium. New officers and an executive committee were elected, with reports praising the year’s drives and nursing service, and plans continuing into late January. The meeting featured performances by the Clare school band and a solo by Mrs. W. S. McAllister.
In a well attended high school gym Clare beat Weidman 34 to 7 in a preseason game. Clare surged in the second quarter and used fourteen players total with substitutions throughout the match. The Freshman team beat a high school pickup 6 to 4 in the preliminary. Clare travels to Boyne City and Charlevoix then hosts Reed City next Friday.
Gsorse AF degarth, director of the department of conservation, ruled Wednesday on a doe versus buck question. A northern game warden reported a hunter killed a doe with six inch horns at the close of the season, prompting review of hunting rules.
The Callam Dam and adjoining property on the Tobacco river northeast of Clare near the city limits was sold last Friday under a Court Decree from August. Harrison witnessed the sale before Acting Court Commissioner A E H Wylie. Herr W Brady of Saginaw was highest bidder with bidders from Saginaw Midland Clare and other places. Original owners included William C O Keefe Katherine Brady Leila B Callam and Frances M Callam with The Bank of Saginaw also having an interest. Brady has not decided disposition of the property yet.
On November 26 the Good Literature Club gathered at Mrs Bernice Jones home for a Thanksgiving feast. Mrs Sternaman received a club gift for her Cupid Up to Date efforts. A letter of appreciation from Mildred Witzpatrick was read and a program led by Miss Merritt followed.
The Sampson Arbor will meet for election of officers at the home of Oris Penrose Tuesday December 11th. Pot luck supper. All members are urged to be present. Mrs O Perirose, Sec.
Miss Margaret Ruba of Ann Arbor, under the Crippled Children's Commission, will visit Clare on Wednesday December 12 to continue follow up work from last June's clinic. The Clare county organization met to plan cooperation with her efforts and to help hospitalize crippled children whose parents cannot pay. Eight children have already been sent to Ann Arbor for treatment, and education of parents is key.
Postmaster C. Kirkbride endorses tuberculosis Christmas seals and their health work while cautioning to place the stickers on the backs of envelopes only. Improper labels on the address side slow the mails. The 1928 seals show blue green and red Ship of Health and the double barred cross.
The Log Cabin Club of Clare, numbering sixteen young at heart ladies, celebrated its seventh or eighth anniversary by a nine o'clock breakfast at Mrs. Del Kemp’s Wast 6th street home on December 4. The club started at the Hide Log Cabin built for a daughter and has met at members’ homes since. A pot luck supper followed by bridge is typical. Mrs. Frank Hochstetler won first prize and Mrs. N Tibbits the consolation.
