Caution Urged in Urea Use for Guile Feeding
Oklahoma livestock health investigators warn urea as a protein substitute can poison cattle and sheep if fed in large amounts for long periods. Steers fed very large doses showed muscular tremors and died within hours, though cattle usually avoid heavy fortified feeds. Urea raises ammonia in the rumen. small amounts are harmless but excessive feeding can cause poisoning.
