Memorial services for Pfc Frank V Krehmar son of Mr and Mrs Joe Krehmar Clare will be held at 2:00 p m Sunday at the Clare Methodist Church Rev Chas B Hahn will officiate He joined the U S Marine Corps Oct 3 1942 and went overseas Mar 10 1943 Parents received a letter July 24 1944 noting posthumous awards including Purple Heart Presidential Unit Citation Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and ribbon with star The family has received the Purple Heart certificate and five medals for marksmanship and bayonet drill He is survived by a sister Victoria Irene and his parents

Isabella County obituary recalls Theller Antoine Johnston born August 17 1861 in Peel Ontario. He settled Rosebush in 1882 married Jessie Cameron in 1885 built a farm west of Rosebush then east of St Henrys. Died August 19 1944 aged 83 leaving two sons Ward and Bowman four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Youths Confess Beagle Robbery Here Last Week

Richard John Heinz and Faye Stats, both youths, waived examination on charges of robbing Mrs. Beagle at Beagle's Cafe at 3 30 am on August 14. They are held on 2500 bond each awaiting circuit court arraignment. Police recovered most of the loot and 5000 ration stamps. Trooper Jack Foster and Pvt. Joseph Brant led the investigation.

Art Lamb Narrow Escape Near Standish

Arthur J. Lamb of this city suffered serious injuries at Stirling well in the Deep River field five miles north of Standish Arenac county. His right throat was lacerated near the jugular, his arm bruised and a bone cracked, with chest injuries. He received first aid in Standish and later medical care. X rays showed no other broken bones.

Camp Rotary Boy Scouts Aid in Forest Fire Fight

Groups of Boy Scouts from Camp Rotary worked in four hour shifts to help extinguish the Cornwell forest fire at the Cornwell Ratch and George Winn farm. They joined fire departments Conservation Department crews and neighbors in bringing the blaze under control and learned firefighting lessons in practice.

Missing in action: T/Sgt Joe H. Waring over Austria

Mrs. Joe H. Waring of Pontiac received word from the War Department that her husband T/Sgt Joe H. Waring has been missing since July 26 over Austria. He enlisted in the Air Corps in spring 1941 and earned two Air Medals and Oak Leaf Clusters for merit after completing 37 missions.

Clare Hardware Refrigorator Helped in China Mission

Michigan State College radio WKAR announced Major John T. Tripp of the U S Army Sanitation Corps secured eight icy ball kerosene refrigerators from Clare Hardware and other suppliers for use in China. The devices power a health laboratory and hospitals where electricity is unavailable, preserving serums for 24 to 36 hours.

Dwyer Aboard LST in Action With Enemies in New Guinea

Thomas E. Dwyer Jr a 24 year old from Clare served as phone man on an LST approaching Lae New Guinea under fire. After bombs hit the ship he helped assist the wounded and returned to duty as aircraft were shot down. He enlisted in June 1942 and served since March 1943 aboard the LST in Huon Gulf.

Reed City mourns longtime legislator Miles Callaghan

Former State Senator and State Representative Miles M. Callaghan of Reed City died at his home after a third stroke. He served Osceola Clare district 1929 to 1937 and again 1941 to 194? He led the Osceola Orchard Company and helped found the Osceola County Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife Rena M. Grant and sister Katherine Cornell.

Charles Emerson Davis born October 29 1870 in Williams County Ohio died August 20 1944 at his home in Sheridan township Clare county Michigan after a brief illness He was 73 He moved to Michigan as a youth and built a farm and home with his own hands He married Dessie Robinet in 1898 and had three children Russell Clarence and Arvilla He was survived by his widow three children fourteen grandchildren and other relatives He was known for his blacksmithing outdoorsman interests and community standing and the notice ends with continued on page.

Archie McLeod Named Postmaster in Marion

Archie McLeod appointed postmaster of Marion succeeding Mrs. Wavial Dunbar who resigned in June. A former Clare resident and long time Marion barber, he ran the Marion ball club for twenty years and served six years as deputy sheriff while active in civic affairs, and plans to join his wife in Whitehall.

March of Dimes Funds Fighting Polio in State

The 1944 March of Dimes appeal reports a record 10 978 491 donated to fight infantile paralysis. Basil O Connor says funds will expand epidemic aid and research as outbreaks rise in North Carolina Kentucky New York Louisiana Pennsylvania Virginia Tennessee Ohio Michigan Maryland Mississippi Indiana. One half of January funds stays with 8 000 county chapters. Local Clare county funds have assisted past victims.

The Post Office Department ends the prior allowance for small packages up to eight ounces to armed forces overseas sent as ordinary mail without the addressee’s request if they contain foodstuffs or candy. Larger gifts up to five pounds may be mailed with a required addressee request, preserving Christmas parcel rules.
