Postmaster General Frank C. Walker announces overseas gifts for Army and Navy personnel must be mailed September 15 to October 15. After October 15 a written request is required. parcels should be strong packed, boxed in durable material, and addressed inside and outside. Packages capped at five pounds and 15 by 36 inches.
Frank Casper of Clare area was injured Wednesday while working at a dagger on a combine. His clothing caught in the mechanism, tearing from his body, and he suffered a severe laceration and burns on one leg before receiving first aid from Dr. G. C. Born.
A year after the Victory Pulpwood Campaign began under War Production Board chair Donald M. Nelson, pulpwood production shows progress. The Sentinel notes improved receipts and comparisons to 1942 peaks, while warning supplies remain tight and demand from military and civilian needs continues to rise. The community pledges to cut its share of 16,000,000 cards this year as wartime needs persist.
The conservation commission cannot change Michigan law to permit taking pheasants where they cause heavy damage. Only the legislature can alter the law next fall. The department notes it cannot liberalize pheasant hunting in Thumb area and cites heavy damage in Huron county while outlining its authority over muskrats to deer in Allegan county.
A Twin Elms Clubhouse luncheon hosted thirty one lady golfers on Wednesday. Mrs. Lucile Skinner scored a hole in one on No 6 last Friday and won in the second group while Mrs. Lucile Haley took the first group prize. All lady golfers are urged to meet at the course at 9 30 next Wednesday morning.
A wild eighth inning gave Brown Corners a 3-2 win over Harrison on Wednesday. Crane pitched well for Harrison and Sweebe showed strong form for Brown Corners.
Richard Emerson born November 20 1872 Fraser ville Ontario died August 2 1944 University Hospital Ann Arbor. He lived in Grant township Michigan since 1892 and served in multiple local offices. Survived by siblings and many relatives with services at home and Dover Tabernacle officiated by Rev Kleinhardt and Rev Hunderich. Interment Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Special Services mark the start of the Church of God Central Michigan State Camp Meeting in St Louis Michigan from August 10 to 20. Clare Church of God holds Church School at 10 00 a m and preaching at 11 00 a m on August 10 with no evening service on August 13. The Ambassadors from Anderson College will attend August 20. Mrs. Horace Joyner of Clare reports her nine year old Hoya carnosa vine has produced three blossoms with a five pointed white star and a red center, each star bearing a tiny red inner star and a honey teardrop as the bud matures. The plant is eight to nine feet tall and typically flowers once yearly in warm, well drained loam mix.
John Bogan longtime Michigan resident died at his niece Mrs Marie Schugs home on East State Street Clare following years of declining health. He was born January 22 1861 in Genesee County New York and died August 8 1944 in Clare aged 83 years 6 months 17 days. He lived in Dexter and Vernon Township Isabella County and is survived by niece Mrs Marie Schug nephew G R Bogan of Marion and many friends. Funeral Mass was held at St Henrys Church Vernon Township and interment at Riverdale Cemetery Mt Pleasant. Thurston Son arranged details. Out of town attendees included Mr and Mrs Richard Bogan Marion G Leibrand and daughter Mrs Dorothy Flood Bay City and others.
The Clare P T A Club sponsors a dance for students alumni and parents at the school gymnasium this Friday evening with dancing from 9 to 12. Patricia Lucas plays piano Jack Rodabaugh drums and Leo Brown on saxophone. Parents are urged to attend to support supervised recreation and enjoy the event.
Lieutenant Bertrand Maxwell of Clare Michigan received the Air Medal at a Ninth Air Force Troop Carrier Command base in the European theater for outstanding flying during the D Day paratroop drop over the Cherbourg peninsula. The 23 year old pilot and son of Mr and Mrs Bertrand Maxwell carried through the mission despite enemy opposition and returned safely with his crew.
Rozena Bronson of Cedar Lake Michigan died suddenly on August 9 1944 at age 54. Born August 18 1889 in Kanawha Station West Virginia she moved to Michigan at eleven and lived with her brother Ernest and foster son Leo. A Seventh Day Adventist church member she cared for children and worked as health permitted. Funeral services will be held at the Academy Cedar Lake at 1 30 PM Saturday with burial in Siple Cemetery Marlette.

The blackberry patch in the Locha Bar district will be open to pickers on August 11 13 and 15 and every other day thereafter until further notice. Admission 0c per person. ABLR Floyd Schmid watchman.
An unknown clipping bureau extorts 20¢ to $1.00 from families of service members by sending postcards claiming a newspaper clipping about their relative will be forwarded for a fee. The clippings come from the hometown paper families already own. The practice is described as a cheap racket that evades prosecution, with 5e typical and reputable firms not soliciting individual clippings.
The Clare Community Council plans a community calendar to avoid date conflicts among local groups. Organizations are asked to send event dates and regular meeting times by August 15. If possible no meetings on Wednesdays or Fridays to reserve those days for churches and schools. The calendar runs September 1, 1944, to June 30, 1945, with Austin Bates John Rodabaugh and Leah Garchow on the coordinating committee.
A and P Store workers enjoyed a Wednesday after work picnic at Clare Tourist Park. They spent the evening socially with a softball game where the girls edged the boys nineteen to a score. watermelon was a popular treat. Attendees included Larry Beck Butch Beadle Jane Bolen Virginia O Grady Margaret Gingery Della Denny Jack Rodabaugh Bill Chaffee and others.
Jack Herron Hart, son of Mr and Mrs Hart Herron, was injured while riding east on the County Line Sunday morning when a car veered from Vernon Hill onto McEwan street and struck him. He was left unconscious briefly but suffered only bruises and shock. he is recovering satisfactorily at home with Dr F C Sanford attending.
Rev and Mrs Ford Belcher of Detroit will attend the Dover Tabernacle Sunday morning. Belcher is a Detroit policeman. They will be joined by Mr and Mrs Betayler who assist with special music. Everyone welcome.

Mrs Albert Dawe of Douglas Michigan reports two letters from Rev Percy V Dawe detailing his move from Bonne Terre Missouri to Aruba Netherlands West Indies where he now leads a congregation of Americans British and Arubans. He describes a 1500 mile Miami to Aruba flight a comfortable ocean view bungalow and winds that keep the climate cool.
County Commissioner of Schools John F. Brown has received fifty copies of the 1944 textbook Health and First Aid by Morris Fishbein and Leslie W. Irwin, distributed by the Michigan Tuberculosis Association. The book covers health and personal hygiene with modern first aid guidance, aided by a 32 page tuberculosis education supplement and colorful illustrations.
