A new derrick rises on the Currie farm near Clare as Cartiers Oil Co begins sinking drive pipe for a well on the N W 1 4 of the S W 1 4. Durnin Well No 5 has casing in and reaches 3300 feet, while Irwin Well No 1 on section 26 has drive pipe at 412 feet and is drilling at 970 feet.

Charles Griswold of Wise Township Dies After Illness
Following a two week illness Charles Griswold age 34 died Tuesday July 28. He was the son of Mrs. Henry Kenyon of Wise Township. Funeral services were held at the L D S church in Coleman with Rev Pendleton officiating and interment in Coleman cemetery.

Mrs Arthur D Shear Dies After Illness In Michigan
Alila M Bush born December 1 1865 South Albion Michigan died July 30 1936 at age 70 in Farwell Michigan after a year long illness. She married Arthur D Shear November 11 1886 and leaves husband two sons Roy Farwell and Harmon at home three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Interment was in Surrey Cemetery with Rev George P Stanford officiating.

Hit and Run Driver Injures Four Indians Near Clare
Saturday afternoon a hit and run driver struck a group of four Indians 12 miles south of Clare injuring two seriously. Mrs Dorothy Pego and William Wab inaw were taken to Clare County General Hospital with cuts and possible internal injuries. The two children escaped without major injuries. John Philip Brewer, a Lansing newspaper man, was detained at Mt Pleasant but released after a Mt Pleasant examination found no proof he was the driver.

WPA Field Day Draws Large Crowd at Clare County
The Wilson State Park and Harrison Fair Grounds hosted the Clare County WPA Field Day on Saturday August 1 drawing a large audience. Farwell and Harrison opened with boys softball with Farwell taking an early 6 0 lead but losing 8 7 to Harrison for the county championship. Maple Grove advanced to face Harrison in the men’s division with Harrison winning 18 2 and set to meet Clare in the next round.

The Treasury Department in Washington announced a $48,680 contract for a new post office in Clare to Spence Bros of Saginaw. They have 240 days to complete the project. O H Early reported a curious find in Vernon Township a small painted turtle discovered near oil wells four miles south of Clare. The shell art features blue and red colors on the back with Uncle Sam’s striped plug hat across the front half and a white painted insignia reading Great Lakes Exposition Cleveland 1936 in gold blue and black letters.

Old Sol rose over Twin Elms as fifty entrants registered for the Central Michigan Golf Tournament. Leo Hampton won medalist honors with 76 and 27 putts.
