Rev John Y Johnston Dies In Rosebush After Illness
The Rev John Y Johnston died at his home in Rosebush on Wednesday afternoon at 1 40 after several months of illness. He will be waked at the Christian Standard church, where he labored for many years, with his funeral set for the following Wednesday at 4 00 in the afternoon. His daughter, currently touring in Italy, will arrive in time for the service.

Former Clare Man Drowns Near Grand Rapids
Louis Lynch, 44, of Grand Rapids, died Sunday at Green Lake Allegan county after slipping into a hole while bathing. Leo Lynch of Loomis learned of the death. the body was recovered about ten oclock that night. Survived by parents, four brothers, and four sisters. Funeral services held in Grand Rapids.

Death Summons Mrs Upthegrove on Sunday Morning
Sunday morning August second marks the passing of Clares longtime resident Mrs William Upthegrove at her daughter Mrs Oliver Becker’s home. Born Sarah Buck in South Lyons Michigan August 13 1850 she married William Upthegrove at 26 and lived in Oakland County before moving to a Clare area farm. Surviving are daughters Mrs Oliver Becker and Alfred of Clare two other daughters Jennie and Edna and the husband are deceased along with ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Baptist church with Rev Chas Stroup delivering the message and interment followed beside her husband in Cherry Grove. Out of town attendees included Miss Hunice Lockwood Mr Jones Mr and Mrs Hoge of Detroit and Mr and Mrs Mark Forsythe of Ann Arbor.

Mildred Ransom a 33 year old gas station and lunch counter operator at the halfway house on U S 27 Clare County was arrested last week for alleged local option law violations. Federal officers searched premises on July 29 and she allegedly sold six bottles of beer to secret officers on July 11. She pled guilty before Judge Tuttle in Bay City and faces sentencing later this week. Her husband is disabled and their sixteen year old son cannot support the family.

On July 28 the Ladies of the Eagle Home Extension Group convened in the church basement for their second year. Tragedy Strikes Local Family As Clair Peters Drowns
Winterfield correspondent reports Clair Peters, 15, drowned in the West Branch river while visiting grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Sutton. He had accompanied 11 year old Henry Vandercreek who alerted for help but could not save him. Peters formerly lived in Winterfield before moving to Ann Arbor two years ago. Family expresses sympathy.
