A Michigan Communications study in Clare shows residents favor progressive social studies in high schools. Teachers Bartow Gravelle and Wheeler defend student participation, with Government Day and student elections proving learning by doing.
A three year old boy wandered into Flower Drug Store in Farwell, claiming he would buy chocolate milk. He shown three pennies and said his name was John with family ties to Dayton Ohio. Authorities traced him to the Jackson Campbells visiting the John Moore Home, his last name Campbell.
Dr. C. B. Neff secretary of the local Board of Education and T. C. Campbell superintendent of Clare Public Schools attended the Association of School Boards meeting in Cadillac on April 20.
The Pioneer Swimming Pool Inc a non profit formed by Rotary and Kiwanis clubs of Clare with support from the Chamber of Commerce outlines goals to raise funds acquire land and build a public pool for youth. A pre drive canvass is planned for one week and committee rosters will be announced later.
Clare high school auditorium hosts the operetta Hollywood Bound at 8:00 p.m. Friday April 23. Miss Nancy Keller calls it the best operetta yet and notes student acting and singing provide valuable stage experience.
Scott Drillers of Clare captured the Class B title in an invitational at Cadillac, defeating Traverse City 63 40 in round one and Manistee 43 42 in a thriller. The team finished 11 2 for the season, with losses to White Cloud and CMC Frosh.
A combined dinner meeting of Clare General Hospital staff and the North Central Osteopathic Society was held at Hotel Doherty on Thursday April 15 at 7 00 P M. Guest speaker Detective Robert Rutilo of the Michigan State Police narcotic division discussed narcotics and their illegal use in the state.
Joe Crawford won the mile in 4 minutes 58 seconds in Clare, as Farwell led with 59 points and Clare took second with 33 while Coleman placed third. In other events, Jim Chandanais won the shot put and Clark Kinsey had a strong showing, but Clare’s track week was hurt by a lack of top finishes. Clare’s baseball team lost 6 to 0 to Mt. Pleasant Oilers with Mt. Pleasant pitcher Roger Frayre allowing one hit and Clare committing four errors. Clare next hosts Coleman on Friday April 23.
A DeMolay meeting drew a crowd from Clare and Coleman Masonic Lodges as initiatory and DeMolay degrees were conferred on Bob Bailey. After the Flower Talk, the Mothers Club donated an Altar Bible and a Marker. Larry Everts received a Rosewood gavel, and a Mothers Club lunch followed in the Masonic dining rooms. The chapter invites any Mason to visit.
Clare's equalized valuation for the city was set at 3 161 886 by the Clare County Board after considering county and city assessment rolls. The decision maintains 50 percent of State Tax Commission figures but adds one mill to Clare’s tax rate to offset the city’s lower valuation, with raises limited to 885 thousand over last April’s roll for this year.
Final arrangements set for Isabella 4 H exhibit at the Methodist Church on April 29. Rev Mackenzie of the First Methodist Church donates church and time to support the day. Reports are due in the office on or before April 15.
Justice Court heard a quarrel over a trespass dispute between Frank Jackson and farmer Carl Bradley. A five person jury found Bradley guilty of assault and battery after Jackson testified Bradley knocked him down on Jacksons land and opened a fence. Bradley was fined plus costs.
Lieutenant Richard E. Thayer, son of Mr and Mrs Lance Thayer of Thayer, graduates from Clare High School and is assigned to Marine Corps School at Quantico Virginia.
Dr. Carl Gross head of the Department of Secondary Education at Michigan State College has accepted Clare Board of Education invitation to address the May 28 commencement. He is nationally prominent in teacher education and an authority on the history of education.
A traveling softball league formed at Evart includes Scott Drillers of Clare along with Barryton Reed City Hvart and two Big Rapids teams. The first home game is at the school lighted field on June 9 and games will be played every Thursday evening through August 1.
The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its twenty third anniversary banquet at the Doherty Hotel on Tuesday April 20. Mrs Neil Sowle received the Girl of the Year award for her dedication and dependability. Fran known as Fran was recording secretary and praised for her service. The event also featured readings,Founder's Day remarks, and seven new members pledged with initiation of officers for the coming year.
Mr. Richard Wheeler announced enrollment day for rural students planning on attending Clairé High will be held April 20. Students will select the subjects they plan for next year.
