Hon A C Carton of Lansing, secretary of the Great Lakes Tidewater Commission, spoke to Clare Chamber of Commerce about moving the ocean inland via the St Lawrence river locks. He outlined a dam below the rapids and a series of locks to allow 30 foot draught ships into the Great Lakes, with Canada and the U S sharing costs on a $123 million project.

Emma McKinley dies after surgery in California
Mrs. J W Schaeffer of Clare reports the death of her sister Mrs Emma McKinley of Los Angeles following an appendicitis operation at Glendale hospital on April first. Born August 8 1859 in Williamsville she moved to Clare in 1876 and later lived in Alma Grand Rapids and Detroit before relocating to Los Angeles in 1923 where Archie McKinley died in 1924. She is survived by four daughters two sisters seven brothers and a grandson. Funeral services were held at the home and burial is in Los Angeles beside her husband.

Clare Fire Department Holds Annual Meeting
Clare Fire Department members met at the hall to conduct regular business and elect officers for the coming year. The mayor and council were recommended to appoint 64 Wellman as Chief, with John Forbes as Assistant Chief and O A Derby as Secretary Treasurer. Captains named for Hose, Ladders, and Chemical divisions were Wm Lange, Wm Haley, and John Groves. The department’s finances were reported as in excellent condition.

The Sentinel notes John Paul Jones former Clare public schools superintendent has been elected Dean of the Kew Junior College in Jackson Michigan. Jones joined Flint Junior College after leaving Clare in 1923 and earned a Master’s at the University of Michigan last summer. The appointment takes effect as the September opening. Jones is Jackson native and previously helped plan a new building after a 1921 fire.
