Cause of Heaves in Horses Tied to Overfeeding and Dusty Hay
A Heard's Dairyman writer explains that emphysema of the lungs in horses is caused by overfeeding with dusty timothy hay or threshed clover hay and by working the animal after a meal when the digestive organs are distended. Indigestion irritates the pneumogastric nerve, affecting the lung nerves and preventing full air expulsion, forcing abdominal muscles into action and producing the double bel lows like cough. The disease is incurable once established.
